Hello,

I’ve searched but cannot find anyone else reporting this problem. My FTM-400 occasionally will start up and randomly change channels. Sometimes it is just on a different channel from when I shut it off but almost all the time I can watch it change channels without touching it. I’ve found that if I disconnect the cable to the control panel for a few seconds it works well for another day or two after I reconnect it. But eventually it reverts back to this random behavior all the time.

Anyone have any ideas how to stop this?

Thanks,
Rick-KR3LC

I would think the first order of business would be to replace the cable and see if the problem clears up. It could be that the connector was not really properly attached to the wires in the first place and movement over time could have allowed the connection to become intermittent. Your description sounds like this may be the case.

As a side note: I would try the new cable before possibly sending in the radio for repairs. I sent in a radio to Yaesu which they received on April 19, I got it back this past Monday. Very long turn-around time right now.

I would be suspicious of the microphone changing the channels either by accidentally buttons on it being pushed or defective microphone.

It could very well be a microphone issue. The microphone plugs into the body of the of the radio, not the head. If the radio is some distance away from the user, and a mic extension cord isn't being used, it could be too much strain on the cord is causing the problem. The problem could be where the cord plugs into the radio or at the connection between the cord and the internal circuit board in the mic. If it's the mic cord, they are easily replaced and replacement cords are available at places like Amazon.
