I'm wanting to get a compact radio for scanning and so far I've come up with the YAESU VX-3R or Icom IC-P7A. Something pocket friendly and smaller than the VR-500 and Icom R-5. I'm favoring the VX-3R US / VX-3E Euro at this point. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The stock antenna on the VX-3 is not very good outside the ham bands but the radio does tune around the commercial bands just fine. Listening to SW is not that great, you need to connect a good antenna and it can overload easily but it does work.

If you have any interest in 800MHZ. Forget they ICOM (US Model). They chopped the heck out of 800MHZ on the US model....Good Luck
