Hey all,
I have a VX-8GR with the APRS option. I see at least one VX-8 in my APRS "earshot" that appears to be transmitting (at intervals, of course) 24/7, which implies the user got it to work off AC power. Whenever I try to run mine off the AC adapter (the NC-86B shown on Universal Radio's site), the power cuts out when it tries to TX the APRS beacon - leading me to believe it's drawing more power than it can supply through the adapter.

Does anyone know if there is a power supply for this radio which will let it run continuously? I haven't got the DC cable (EDC-5B or EDC-6) and I also just thought of one thing I haven't tried yet - not having the battery attached to the radio when I power it up.

The wallwart definatly will not supply enough juice for full power transmit. Maybe enought for 0.5w Tx but not any power levels above that.

IMHO all the AC wallwarts for the VX-series are insufficient for transmitting at any power level. On my VX-5R, it really doesn't like receive either, inducing a hum on the audio. Perhaps the cleanest solution would be a second battery, and swap them out. HTH.

What he said but applied to icom as well. My Icom used to hum with a WW on receive. I have never tried with my FT-170 or FT-277, due to having a spare battery for each radio.

It's not an option. All VX-8GRs have APRS.

It's only an implication. You are assuming that the other guy is running his radio using the charger supplied with the radio. He may have hooked it up to a power supply using the E-DC-6 cable or something like it.

Does anyone know if there is a power supply for this radio which will let it run continuously?
There are none listed in the owner's manual for the radio. Any regulated 12-16 volt power supply capable of delivering at least 2 amps should work through the E-DC-6 cable.

The standard chargers will not work this way. Now if you have the desktop drop in charger it usually works fine. This charger charges the battery itself and does not go through the radio to charge. The radio never sees the charger. I know of one ham that does this with his vx8.
