New to this radio. I was trying to get the ENC/DEC to ENC only. As I had pushed the set button then the right channel button to get Tone M... then the dial to ENC, pushed the set button and the audio disappeared. Volume is up and squelch is off. Help, please.

Sounds like you missed one teensy little step in the process:
- Press the middle Set button to enter the menu system,
- Turn the dial to TONE M,
- Press in on the dial to bring up the current Tone Mode,
- Turn the dial to get to the Mode selection you want (ENC),
- Press in on the dial to enter what you just selected (I think you may have missed this step?) - the display returns to TONE M.
- Now press Set to exit back to normal operation.
See pg 29 in the Operating Manual for details.

If you're doing this on a memory channel, the tone mode change is temporary. If you change channels and come back to this channel, or if you turn the radio off and back on, the previous memorized setting will come back. To keep the desired tone mode setting, re-write the channel with the desired tone mode setting into that memory channel. See pg 32 in the manual for memory writing.

Let me know if you need further help. I have an '8900 and the manual right here. Or, call me on 10M FM?? ;)

I think I have followed that, But I will run at it again. I was looking and found the section on muting audio, and followed it to unmute everything and it does not work either. The left side is working fine. The right side was until I tried to fix the ENC/DEC ... which I cannot get to stay programmed on the individual channels. I printed out its manual.

I have a Nifty mini-manual coming in for this radio. I want to take it out to use for a few POTA activations on 2m and 70 CM activations in a few local parks. It is my "base" for ARES and RACES and I need to come up to speed on it. I have an ICOM 2 bander for portable ares/races in a go bag.

Thank you for the prompt response.

What antenna are you using for mobile to allow 4 bands?

I agree - turn off the Mute feature for now til you're more familiar with the radio.

On the right side, it sounds to me like you'll have to re-program the memory channel(s) in question to get the ENC/DEC setting back to ENC only. I suspect the /DEC part of that is causing the radio to stay muted because the signals you are receiving don't have the necessary CTCSS tone. That's a guess.

My '8900 is currently at the base station, using a Comet GP-15 for 6, 2 & 440. I can't work 10M with it (but I have another radio/antenna I can use for 10M FM). I did use it mobile in the past, and it worked very well on all 4 bands. I have a Diamond HV-7A 4-band mobile antenna that I am no longer using. It is already tuned for the FM subbands on 10M and 6M and works nicely. You would need a heavy-duty mobile mount like the Diamond K-400 to use it. I will gladly sell and ship the HV-7A to you for $100 if you want it. See the Diamond info on the links.

My mistake. Thank you for the reminder. I won't do it again.
