The same as any conventional channel. It's really hard to say because there are a lot of variables like weather conditions, topography, etc.

The difference with a trunked system is sometimes the combiner network, due to poor planning, will not equally balance the actual TX in to the antenna.

In 800 a lot more has to do with if the system is a NPSPAC 821 system or an 806 system instead of the actual brand. If it is NPSPAC system there are mandatory signal contours so the signal drops off 3 to 6 miles from the agencies jurisdiction where the 806 system can be set for maximum smoke.

Of course there are other variables like the licensed antenna height and licensed transmitter ERP, required antenna patters, and is there any local interference generators like a NEXTEL iDEN site that can desense your scanner.

There are so many variables there is no clear answer to your quesation.

I'd like to piggy back on this thread if I might. one of the factors in my old hometown going to a trunked system was that with the old repeater system for each agency, there were dead spots. Also, there was no way for each agency to communicate with each other, without switching to that agencies frequency. And some radio's didn't have all the frequencies for the various agencies.

Here's a link to the Glynn county Georgia trunked radio system

My new community is all conventional. Well, Kitsap county Washingtons public safety communications are all VHF with Bainbridge island Washingtons being VHF for police and VHF low band for fire/ems

There don't seem to be any dead spots in Kisap county which has mountainous terrain.

It's my understanding that VHF hi band has a better range than 800mhz.

But I still don't understand how Kitsap county Washington, isn't on a trunked system, when they're much larger than my old hometown community.

For 800 Mhz. depending on RF power, antenna hight, and tilt, over flat terrane the range could 6 to 25 miles with about 85% coverage.
