Bearcat Warehouse currently has the Uniden complete cable for $84.90 and the Garmin WITH adapter for 89.85.

I just ordered the Uniden one on Saturday to go with the 436 I bought from them.

I may be wrong, but I believe the Uniden is a repackaged Garmin - if not, someone please yell.

My understanding is that it might be able to be used by connecting it to https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/p...roducts_id=114. That specific model is not listed, but perhaps you could email them and ask.

Any thoughts on whether this will work? I've got a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx that has a mini USB out. I'm hoping to simply take a USB cable, use a gender changer and plug in a USB cable with the 396XT connector on the end of it from eBay.

NO, wrong protocol USB is a one way interface, must have a computer with USB port to connect, get a GPS with the old 4 pin Garmin round or blade connector.

You need the Serial cable that comes with the 396xt or you may by be able to get it from scannermaster, a null modem adapter and a gender changer also available from scannermaster.

to conntect with the garmin etrex' serial cable.

At least that's what I need.

The bottom line is that you're looking for a GPS with serial output, and outputs standard NMEA commands. In the eTrex line, that would be the plain (basic) eTrex or the newer eTrex H. I use mine with an eTrex H sometimes.

This seems like a royal pain in the arse. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a portable handheld radio if you have to carry two or more additional cables and some adapters around. Holding out hope that an on-board GPS might be in the works in five years or so when the next round of radios (hopefully) comes out.
