If I already have drivers aboard for the 996xt, do I need to install another set for the 996p2? I realize I will be using a standard USB cable rather than the special Uniden USB/seial adaptor cable.

BCD996XT does not have drivers at all. It is native serial. If you are using a USB-->RS232 converter cable, it has drivers that are certainly not the same as the drivers needed for the cable.

Is FREEScan compatible with the P2 yet? The webpage doesnt indicate it yet
ARC/PROSCAN say they are compatible

Yes. He has a Beta version linked to his forums.
I found out you have to register to see it.

So I registered and downloaded the file after figuring out how to overwrite the FS 2.17 file I had.
Got the driver's from UPMan's Link.
Radio programmed flawlessly and works Perfectly!
I'm partial to the 396/996 series scanners, but P2 is forcing a change.
I was surprised this 996P2 was not pre-loaded like others..

Actually the pre-loaded data that was in the previous scanners went out of date pretty quickly - that's probably why its use was discontinued.

I suspect the pre-loaded data was meant as a 'demo', but it still caused more problems than it's currently worth...Mike

Bought 996P2 couple of days ago from HRO Anaheim. Using serial port on back to serial port on computer, was able to transfer many of my conv/trunk systems here in Los Angeles from 996XT via ARCXT-PRO to 996P2. From time opened box to up and running on LAPD P25, LA ICIS P25, LASD, and many other systems, no more than 15 minutes.
996P2 P25 phase 1 decode is pretty good. VHF and UHF sensitivity is great. Very nice audio quality, pretty similar to 996XT. Will probably run this side by side with 536HP and do some comparisons this weekend.
Just ordered 352HP from Jeff at Ham Station. Going to be busy with comparisons on multiple systems here in So. Calif. in next week or so.

Ok.. it arrived. Plugged it in via USB and it connected and assigned port with no additional drivers installed. Initial uploads using the beta Freescan yielded some errors I don't understand yet but it loaded the important stuff.

996P2 does a pretty good job decoding Maryland FiRST P2 System.

Looking forward to any video footage or comparison notes you put out there.

I've neen running the 996P2 side ny side with the 536 all afternoon, on Motorola and P25 sites but mainly one Phase 2 site.

There is no significant delay (echo) when running them side by side so the decoding software and audio to the speakers works at pretty much the same speed. There is some echo/lag between the 996P2 and the 996XT when running them side by side.

They seem to latch on to signal pretty much at the same instant.

The 536 has a sound that is stronger on the base, while the 996P2 sounds more like a 996XT in terms of tone. You can't really tell much difference in terms of the different filters in the radios by ear..

The 996P2 just seems like all of a sudden the 996XT gets Phase 2. The 996P2 sounds good on the phase 2 system I monitor, as it does listening to Motorola or phase 1 P25.

The thing I dislike about the 996P2 compared to the 996XT is the XT will keep right on running trough an engine start where the P2 shut down and restarts.

Maybe load the correct drivers and the errors will go away?

Also been running my 996P2 with 536HP. Other than the 536HP able to decode very weak (almost 0 bars) P25 slightly better than 996P2, for all the systems I regularly listen to, the 996P2 does a great job.
As noted by Mark in MD, 536HP has more bassy sound. I actually like the less bassy sound of the 996P2 (and cousin 996XT) better. Going to try some Phase 2 listening this weekend, but based on above posts, P2 decoding is also good.
The 996P2 is very sensitive on high VHF, perhaps a tad more than the 536HP, here at my location. Overall, the 996P2 is a keeper, and based on its performance so far, I look forward to the BCD325 I ordered from Ham Station, which should be arriving in a few days. I love the 436HP, but I am sure looking forward to a smaller footprint on my belt or pocket when I am out an about.

So I am guessing that the drivers I already had aboard for the 536 are the drivers that the 996P2 used when first connected.

Did you install the driver first? You don't put it in a file - you install it.
