Null modem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have never seen the requirement for one to just hook up to a computer. To hook two scanners together, yes. Similar to using a crossover ethernet cable to directly hook two computers together.

I wonder if thisor this would be of any help to folks having problems getting USB-SERIAL converters to work. I realize the second one is a little pricey but surely one could find something maybe with just a single outlet that is a bit cheaper. Unfortunately Ebay did not turn up anything in the Express type, that I saw.

Default BCD396T - Need verification key ??

"I cannot find anywhere in the instructions where it says a registration key is needed (it isn't)"

The download instructions call for the verification key as does the installation application (BCD396T_V3_02_02.scn). My issue is that the Uniden website does not recognize my
ESN and / or checksum number (claiming they do not match) so I cannot register my scanner or get the verification key in order to upgrade the firmware (I'm running 1.20 on my BCD396T)

It may be time to find a friend who has a computer with a different operating system such as Windows XP, or just another computer. I used to have a BC796D. Let me know if I can help.

The above was referencing a different scanner.

I can only suggest that you are not entering the values correctly. Without more info (like the ESN and checksum you are trying to register) I can't guess further.

Default USB driver for cable in Windows XP

Hey UPman, I am having a heck of a time get Windows to get a usb to serial port driver for the usb cable that came with my 996T scanner. The software works fine up to the point where I get the error message about not being able to communicate with the scanner. I checked the software it shows the correct comport, etc. It's the dumb Windows won't install the driver. I have updated the scanner before with no problem. Do you have a universal serial to usb driver for Windows, service pack 3? Thanks.

There is no such thing as a universal driver. The drivers are specific to the cable you are using.

How could you know the com port if the driver isn't loaded? The usual problem is installing the cable in the PC before loading the driver. In that case windows loads a driver but its always the wrong one. You need to install the driver and then plug in the cable.

The plot thickens. Now this is happening, and this is on the same computer I programmed the scanner about a month ago.

What am i missing. I have all the speeds set the same on the software, port and the scanner.

Almost bald, and black and blue from ear lobe to ear lobe!

Do you have a PDA, a Cell Phone, or other device that connects to one of your USB ports? Have you added anything recently? I had sync software to a Palm PDA that grabbed all the USB ports on my machine, even though it was connected to a (real) serial port. I was able to change the configuration of that software not to do that.

I think that i have come to a conclusion. I located a computer with XP SP3 and it did the same thing. I beleive that the firm ware is corrupt, and when i first started the up load it screwed the scanner up.

I think i am going to let my battle wounds scar over and try again later.

Or if we get more snow and I make enough money just go by a 996. Knowing my luck it would do the same thing. lol.

If I understand what you might be saying, look for a *.zip file. That is what is downloaded and then you unzip to the location you choose.

DaveShaw, I had the same problem with the ESN and tried it twice before I realized that it places the first 6 or so numbers of the ESN in front of the box. You don't enter the entire number just the portin after what is listed.

I only manage Uniden America models. I have no info on models for other markets.

However, if the UBC3300XLT is like the BC250D (seems to be), then it does not have flash ROM, so cannot be updated.
