You and I go back aways and I know you have good intentions with this thread but this will end up like every other verses thread: the Uniden buffs are gonna say their radio is better while the GRE fanboys are gonna say their radios are better. It's the old Coke vs. Pepsi debate. Having used both (but currently owning a 396xt for full disclosure) I prefer the Uniden 396xt. It works great on VIPER (I believe you are still here in NC) and does great on local VHF/UHF. Radio size is also a big part of my decision as I need something small and compact. Now: I think GRE makes great radios and has some wicked cool ideas but for my wants & needs here in central NC the 396xt does everything I need it to and more.
That being said: The above is my opinion only and ultimately the only one that can make the above decision is YOU
Happy Monitoring Brother!

I own both and I find the PSR-500 to be more sensitive. However, compared to the 396T, the 396XT has closed the gap considerably and is nearly as sensitive as the 500 on 800 MHz. Everything I monitor is on 800 MHz so I can't tell you about the other frequency ranges. The 396XT is less prone to overload, and that is a major consideration if you are monitoring in urban areas and have trouble with cell tower inerference.

thank's guy's.marshall, just for the record.i know that i never believed it when you and paul said that the xt was going to be better than the t in the sensitivity dept.i said it before, and i'll say it again.boy was i wrong !. the xt has got to be the best portable scanner i've ever had. i've had plenty of them.while i enjoy base scanner's too,i'm mostly a portable fan. i know they have different design's.i do prefer the audio quality of the psr-500 over the xt.i also enjoy the 500's ability to eliminate the squelch tail. i'm not a big fan of listening to the click of the audio dropping out. i prefer the easy work around of having 25,000 channel's at your command, over v-folder's. i love the fire tone out search and function.the county to the south of me <n.j.> uses a 500 mhz.fire dispatch fq. i have a hard time picking it up on almost any radio.the xt pick's it up almost flawlessly. i sold off my psr-600 <well documented overload issue>. i look forward to the bcd996xt when it hit's the shelves. i don't think this thread will spawn a controversy among the people that have both radio's.

I've been running a 600 side by side with a 396XT. To my ears, in my location, sensitivity, P25 decode, etc. are indistinguishable.

GRE's are more sensitive, esp on VHF systems.
However that is not always a bad thing for the 396XT (less overloading etc).

Sensitivity is a specification measurable using RF test equipment. It should not be confused with the ability to receive, which is affected by real world things like the RF environment, the antenna used, in addition to the sensitivity.
As a rule, GRE models have a more sensitive receiver as measured on lab equipment. In some environments this will result in better receive ability. In others, it will result in worse.
