Default USB-1 and Vista 64 Bit Problem

Has anybody else experienced any problems using the USB-1 cable on Windows Vista 64 bit? I've used it on XP Pro and Vista 32 bit without any problems, but for some reason on the 64 bit OS it causes the PC to blue screen and reboot the instant the UASD tries to acces the port. After the reboot the PC takes a lot of time to recover. It also doesn't seem to like to change the com port number, again only on 64 bit Vista. I can stick in only one USB port and get it to work (as COM6), but if I move it around to any other USB port it refuses to work even if I change the port number back to COM6. It's not a show stopper but it sure is frustrating.

Thanks,
Russell

Default I hate Vista-64bit

Russell;
While I cannot speak about that particular cable, I have had problems with Windows Vista 64 bit.
I could not get my Belkin USB-Serial port adapter to work on it. In fact, a few other things did not work with that version of Vista.I wanted to add additional USB ports on the rear of my desktop and discovered that I could not. The reason? You guessed it, the 64 bit OS. I had to search high and low before I found one on the internet at almost double the price. Belkin told me that they did not (at the time) have a driver for 64 bit because there was not a high demand for it but that they were working on getting one out.I eventualy got rid of the computer and switched to a 32 bit OS. I've been trouble free ever since! So it may not be you doing something wrong or something wrong with the cable, it just may be the 64 bit OS. It needs a driver specificaly made for it in some cases to work right. I feel your frustration.....

This really sounds like a driver issue. Most software is written for 32-bit and will run ok on 64-bit operating system with little to no problems. Drivers on the other hand are a sticky wicket and it is most likely that the driver you are using is for 32-bit, and thus blue screens on your 64-bit system.

The best thing to do, is finding a 64-bit for your cable. Check with the manufacturer of the cable, and see if they have any drivers available, even a beta driver at this point would be nice. Until there is more demand for 64-bit drivers and software, most vendors will continue push out 32-bit stuff only.

Hi Russell:

For what it's worth, I've been running a 64-bit Vista machine for quite a while and have not had any blue screen or other issues with the USB cable.

Thanks - Mike

I have had zero problems with Vista 64-bit and the Uniden USB-1 cable. I am using an Intel DP35DP motherboard. You may want to verify that you're using the proper chipset/USB drivers for your motherboard (and they are the most recent versions available). Also, check to see if the release history of your BIOS mentions anything about USB/Vista/64-bit issues and see if a newer version is available.

Ideally, you should also test a different USB -> serial adapter (belkin, iogear or the like), with a different serial device connected to see if that works.

If there were to all fail in a similar way, it's something beneath that level such as a BIOS setting/problem, windows issue or actual hardware issue.

In any case, I've been successfully using Vista 64-bit with the Uniden USB-1 cable since installation. In fact, I run 4 of them simultanesouly without issue.

Upon reading your initial post again, I'm willing to bet it's the chipset/USB drivers that are having the issue with the 64-bit OS, not the USB-1 (prolific) driver. Have you successfully used any other USB devices with the 64-bit version of the OS?

Hope that helps,
Matt

Same here (sort of!):

I have Windows 7 64-bit on my laptop, and as a second OS here on the desktop, and the USB-1 works just fine in both locations...

I have a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard and it blue screens every time I first install Vista x64 or Windows 7 x64 using the USB cable. It'll finally settle down after awhile and go to working but it is very aggravating. If I install an x86 Windows all is well, but 32 bit doesn't recognize my 8 gig of ram.
