Question Site names being alphabetizing

I am adding a system that will run me across a state from east to west. Problem is that after I enter all of the sites I want and the way I want them placed in the system my 396xt alphabetizes them instead of leaving them the way I really want. Will this really matter while in the long run?

I meant: "Sites being alphabetized"

You might try numbering the names in the order you want them. For single digit sites use 01, 02, etc. in case it sorts on the first digit.

Just a thought, haven't tried it myself.

If you assign them SQK's (system quick keys) in order from east to west, it won't matter if they are alphabetized or not inside the scanner. You select the SQK for the area you are in as you travel through the state.

If I did it this way then I would have to know just when and where to turn on and turn off each site. Don't you think this could be more trouble than it is worth while driving at 65mph? I have a minimum of 14 sites and 209 miles of driving to contend with.
I was told in another post that the Uniden Scanner holds on to the last site freq. it was locked onto until it looses it and not until it picks up a stronger site. Is this true?

Wirelessly posted (MOT-QA30/00.72 UP.Browser/7.2.7.5.610 (GUI) MMP/2.0)

It is true, IF you put all the different site's CC's in one site. However, this can get annoying because it will stay locked onto a site that is well out of distance, because it hears a little of the CC. It usually stays on a CC way past range it can actually still decode at.

The RS Pro-106 has this feature, but they have threshold adjustments, so if the decode rate it less than say 90%, it will search for a better CC, this is one major thing I miss from the 106.

This is where using the optional GPS Location Based Scanning would really help you out. As you go from place to place the GPS could help your 396xt/996xt turn on/off sites as you travel through coordinates.

Okay, I have read up some on the GPS a little bit. Can you give me some idea as to the process to get up and running using GPS. I do have a GPS unit that is compatible with the my 396xt. So I take it that you still add all of the sites then input the latitude and longitude of said sites? Do the coordinates have to be exact or just close to the site location?

"In the ballpark" is adequate. Bear in mind that you can also select a range in miles to help anything that isn't exact.

The RR database has a way to get to the transmitter's coordinates, so they are "findable". Also if you use the Butel software they have a lookup feature where you input the city and state name and that will give you the coordinates, and you can click a button to add them to the site's (or group's) location. Very handy feature.

With you doing the travelling, GPS enabling is the best option. We went from Kentucky to North Dakota recently and pretty much let the GPS turn on what needed to be and turn off what was out of range.

Once you get the hang of it, and it is pretty easy, you'll be quite happy you used that option.
