Default 996XT UHF intermod

Having my BCD996XT now for about three weeks, I noticed when I connect it to an outside antenna the UHF band is just about useless, it’s full of intermod. The VHF bands seams to be OK for the most part. I live right in the City of Phoenix which does have a high RF saturation. Using the inside whip antenna, the 996XT works OK, however this limits me from receiving the UHF repeaters on the other side of the city. I know it’s intermod, the frequencies are clear one minute and then out of no-where, pager, data and voices mixing the next minute.

Are others having similar issues? Any suggestions on how to reduce or eliminate the intermod? I use the same antenna, coax and connectors on my IC-7000, FT-897 and TW-4000, and they receive the public service UHF frequencies with no intermod.

Did you try to use the attenuator feature on the scanner?
