Uniden Announces Industry’s First GPS-Enabled Scanner
New Mobile Model Features Close Call™ Technology and APCO 25 Capability In a Desktop Design
Fort Worth, Texas, September 1, 2005 – Uniden America Corporation, a leading manufacturer of wireless consumer electronics, today announced a new mobile digital scanner, the Bearcat BCD996T. This model introduces the first-ever GPS-enabled scanner, allowing the product to automatically select nearby radio systems for scanning. The BCD996T also offers APCO 25 digital capability, allowing consumers to monitor the activities and signals of city and government service departments, and features advanced scanner technology in an in-dash or mobile mount design.
The GPS-enabled feature offered by the BCD996T provides automatic system selection, which permits the scanner to turn system reception on or off depending on the user’s location, and allows the user to define the scanner display to show location-based information.
In addition, when a GPS unit, not included with this scanner, is connected to the BCD996T, it will alert at areas of special interest, such as dangerous intersections, school zones, or general points of interest.
Featuring APCO 25 capability, Uniden’s BCD996T is poised to further enhance Uniden’s offerings to public safety and increase interoperability between agencies using different types of radio systems. Uniden’s BCD996T will not permit users to monitor sensitive, encrypted signals from national and local security services.
The Bearcat BCD996T also offers Close Call™ RF Capture Technology, Dynamic Memory Management, Fire Tone-Out, and Multi-site programming as well as 6,000 channels and a frequency range of 25 MHz to 1.3 GHz (excluding cellular and UHF TV frequencies). This new model is slated to hit retail shelves in spring 2006 and carries a MSRP of $849.99.
“The BCD996T, the first GPS-enabled model in the scanner industry, is another milestone in the evolution of scanning,” said Paul Opitz, product manager at Uniden America Corporation. “These new features will provide an efficient way for agencies that need compatibility in multiple geographic areas to use the scanner without having to reprogram the equipment for each location.”

Awesome!
I've been looking for a way to link GPS with a scanner and it looks like we have a winner here.
It's like deja vu all over again:

Edit: Deleted question about GPS; GPS receiver is not included.

Photo and more description on the features will have to wait for my return to the office next week (and maybe give me a day or two to catch up on 1 week's worth of unhandled stuff).
But, I can share this list of brand new features never before seen in a Uniden (or, for the most part, anyone else's) scanner:
- Multi-Site Trunking
- Temporary Lockout
- Startup Configuration
- Location-Based Scanning (GPS not included)
- Non-Radio Location-Based GPS Features (GPS not included)
- Close Call Do-Not-Disturb
- Alert Plus
- "Soft" Search Keys
- Two-Color Backlighting
- Single-Handed Function Operation
- Close Call Temporary Store
- GPS Display Mode (GPS not included)
- In- or Under-Dash Mounting (DIN-E Sleeve included)

I got to hear some more details about the GPS. This sounds good for mobile users.

It sounds pretty cool, but will it include the alpha-numeric data for every agency as well? I mean, are we talking about a mobile Radio Reference Data Base that brings up all the channel info as well as the frequencies and control channels? Just curious. It does sound neat.
Uniden also has a GPS radar detector that remembers false alarm locations too, in case you did not know that.

So will the GPS connector be the standard 9 pin serial? Many of the top GPS handhelds use a 3 ring 1/8" jack to OEM connector.

Before someone asks let's do the math....
If the 396T's MSRP is 799 rounded to 800 and it is sold by CEI at 520 shipped that makes it 520/799 = .65 rounded.
So the CEI delivered price would be .65 x 850 = 552 rounded.
So we can also do the math and the wholesale price to the dealers would be:
.50 x 850 = 425.00.
Now extrapolating the market prices on the 396T which just becomes obsolete more or less we have CEI price of 520 less the obsoletion factor of 20% which makes it 520 - (.2 x 520) = $416.00.....
Hmmmm.... Santa you can pass me by this year.... I will wait to have my Christmas in March when the new unit hits the market!!!!
One very happy camper .... My 796 will hold me till then... I already have a $500 start on the new model since I changed my mind at the last minute and did'nt order a 396 :-) A base model is sooooo good..... Its almost better than sex... :-)
You've done it this time Paul :-)
