What I want to know is about the pin out of the cable, going to make one.
Is it a straight pin to pin cable or does it cross?
Any help on the correct pinout is helpful, computer end and radio end.
Thanks,
Danny

The 780xlt has a straight pin out. Any standard cable you buy at radio shack will work.

I belive it's a null modem cable that's needed. One with the TX / RX pins swapped (2 and 3).

No, the cable to connect the 780 to a computer is a "RS-232C straight interface cable", per the 780 user manual. The null modem adapter or cable is for connecting two 780s together for cloning.
