Now that GRE is no longer making scanners, we're SOL concerning APCO P25 X2-TDMA and APCO P25 Phase II. I sent Uniden a "Customer Service" question concerning a new radio that will support both. I have asked this question before, when my county changed over to Motorola X2-TDMA last year. From their responses to me, Uniden didn't care about these systems, or that GRE was eating up their potential customers. At that time there were only three localities using this (Government grants) so it wasn't on the grand scale of things. Now, many more jurisdictions are converting and if enough of us ask for the scanners, maybe they'll start to listen. Doubt it though.

Not announcing a new radio does not equal not listening. Uniden's official reply on whether or not such-and-such a radio is in planning or production has always been that they will not make announcements, speculation, discussion, etc, on any item until they are ready to sell said item. The implied timeline has been that we will find out about a new radio about six months ahead of being able to purchase it.

That, if it is the same reasoning as the DC MPD, is a security feature, so you cannot figure out which cabs, or how many cabs, are in your vacinity and whether it is coming to pick you up or not.

Your Grandma must have been cool!

I, too, have been "scanning" since I got a converter (Heathkit, I believe) for the AM car radio that tuned the 154Mhz band (DC Fire/PD, MontgoCo, etc) and could have 2 crystals for frequencies I listened to most, since the late 50's /early 60's.

I have been very true to Uniden, but I could not resist a deal on a PSR800 a couple weeks ago, so..

Dewey, I can now get PG County again!

I am trying to see if the new Maryland F.I.R.S.T. system will work, too, but nothing is transmitting close enough to me yet.

JK (Hmmmm, have to change that tag line!)

My first memory of "police scanning" was with a 1942 Zenith Console with AM, short wave and "Police" bands. With the radio becoming more computerized, those of us who "pay attention" are being quietly eased out. JAY911 - "Not announcing a new radio does not equal not listening." You are quite correct, however the sound of silence can sustain ones imagination for only a short time. RACES and ARES serve the community. How many amateurs can afford a specialized single use radio, that costs several thousands of dollars, in order to fill their internal need to serve the public? The intent is to keep the "bad guys" from knowing what the "good guys" are doing. Tyrannical regimes keep information from the common rabble. Technology seems to be on their side.

Now I'm really jealous! I miss montioring PG, especially as a PG resident. I heard about a month ago that a friend to both of us was not happy with his 800's performance when it came to monitoring PG. I think it was also due to the typically and easily overloaded front end on GRE's which was giving him more trouble than he wanted. I really really really do wish that Uniden will soon move and add TDMA, but after selling off everything to get the two HPs, I would surely have to get a dog, build him/her a house, and then but an antenna on the dog house, my new home, before I could even begin to explain to the wife that I am now ready for something else just because of TDMA.

the alphabet is making me dizzy reading this. im gonna need a acronym book or something like it. how do you memorize all those letters and what they mean, especially after a six pack waiting on your gear to get here in the mail. is there a book that -decodes- all the static (letter configuration of long writing) in what the @#!$ you all are saying? wiki is cool but hey its hell going back and forth between forum and that. state dept and dept of def have books that define acronyms. do hams?
