side screw knobs

hi everyone,

I bought a bracket to mount my bc780xlt and my bc796D, but ive long since thrown away the knobs that would be used to mount the scanners to the bracket..

I saw that scannermaster has a bracket kit with the knobs in it but I just need the knobs, seems a shame to get the kits just for the knobs lol

anyways, anyone know where i can order some?

I found the knob/screws that are used to mount my GRE PSR-600 are the same size and thread as my Uniden 996XT. If you have another older radio around, you might try those screws. If you have a Radio Shack store around or some other electronics store, you might try that as well... Good luck!

The moral of the story? Always hang on to your knobs. (Even if it's technically illegal in 48 states)

Murphy's Law dictates that as soon as you throw out that little baggie of parts, you'll need the 25 cent part that was included in there that costs 7 bucks and weeks to replace.

That's why I have tons and tons of useless crap and the original boxes and manuals from stuff I bought in the 80's. You know, in case I need to return it in the original packing - 25 years later! Watch Hoarders - Mondays on A&E.

Buy the bracket kit keep the knobs and put it on ebay for someone that held on to their knobs.

I'd bet standard CB knobs would thread right in..And they're easy to find at any CB shop, truck stop, and maybe even (ugh) Radio Shack.

At great risk of incriminating myself, I too discarded or misplaced knobs.

I went to the local Home Deport and got machine screw (metric I think). If you do this, be sure they aren't too long so as to short something out inside the radio.

If this is a mobile installation, it might be a blessing in disguise. Regular screws or even hex screws may thwart a would-be thief.

Well i think i would have a nice alarm system to thwart a would -be thief.

You need to use the side screw knobs that came with the scaner from Uniden. If you use something elese you could put the screws inside the scanner and could short out the circuit board and after that comes in contact with metal you will not have a working scanner. I have used Uniden/Bearcat scanners for years.I do have some extra parts like dc cables, mounting hardwre, ect. If you use other mounting knobs like machine screws from Home Depot you will cause damage to the scanner.Use what the scanner needs per the manufacturer.The manufacture knows more about the scanner as far as what needs to be used on that scanner.Allways tust the manufacturer to produce OEM parts that can be used with the scanner.

That's something I hadn't thought of, replacements from a CB shop. Today's gear being made in the Far East has gone metric and mounting bolts pretty much standard except for length, that's where washers come in. NEVER allow the bolts to come in contact with the circuit board, that's inviting disaster! You can feel for it with the rig disconnected from power (not just switched off) and use washers as appropriate so the bolts don't penetrate the case.

Do not trust any Home Depot or any CB Store or a Radio Shack becase they have no idea on what you are talking about or what you need.ALLWAYS order the parts that are made for the scanner from who made the scanner.This way you will avoid shorting out the scanner on 12 volts dc. You could give the scanner a *Smoke Test* along with seeing sparks.If you need parts you can allways go to ANY search engine on the internet and type in the model number and name of the scanner and find a parts list in the owners manual of any scanner.If you are going to do the job right, do it with the right parts that are OEM from who made the scanner.G&G Communications has those parts that are needed for scanners that are no longer being made. Gerry does have everything you need on his web site including antennas, ac and dc power cords, speakers, etc. Give G&G a try.

Depending on who/where the radio originated the threads for the knobs can be either SAE or metric. On several occasions I've taken a radio to the hardware store and tried different screw threads until I found one that fits. Short machine screws with slotted or Philips heads work well from a security point of view.
But, as several have already said, hanging on to the original mounting screws is the easiest way to solve the problem, assuming you can remember where you put them later on when they're needed.

bigmattyl, I have brand new in a un-opened package from Uniden a set of knobs that will fit the Uniden 780 and the 796.These will fit and they are Uniden parts. These are brand new and have neer been taken out of the package.Please send me a PM as to where I can contact you with a telephone number so I may call you direct. Do not go to a hardware store as you are much better off with the Uniden side knobs that you need.These are made to fit the 780 and the 796.I also have other Uniden parts as far as dc cables, mounting brackets, owners manuals, etc.Sorry but you do not need to try any other screws as this will cause damage to your radio when the LONGER side screws go inside the case and touch the circuit board.Then you will have a non-working scanner.* Trying to help others when they need help*

I gotcha, back then I was quite a "knob hoarder"s well as other boxes of useful crap!

Lately I've become somewhat of a minimalist. I tend to gravitate towards radios that are do-all devices to go with my prepping hoard!
