Question HP-1 external power behavior

I'm thinking about getting a new scanner to permanently install in my car, and am leaning towards the HP-1 currently (mainly for replay and form factor/size). One concern of mine is how the HP-1 reacts when external power is added/removed, with batteries installed. Is it possible to configure it to power on/off automatically when the external power state changes?

I understand from the documentation and some research that without batteries any features depending on the SD card (such as replay) will not be available to prevent corruption, so I would prefer to operate with batteries installed to retain those features.

You do have to manually turn it on and off. Unit will stay on when the external power is removed. If you cycle external power you will get a "charge batteries?" message which requires a response. I run mobile and leave it powered all of the time.

I decided that power control was more important than recording, and have my HP1 on ignition sense. Since the darn thing is smart enough to ask charge/no charge, you would think there could be an option for auto power control even though batteries are installed.

I have a 996xt permanently installed and hard wired to my Ignition. It comes with a AC, DC, and hard wire.

I don't think I could leave my HP installed all the time.

Thanks all. I figured it would probably require some manual intervention to turn it on/off, but was hoping to be wrong. I hate to give up recording to get automatic power control, but it may come down to that.

The HP-1 still has me on the form factor though - just no room to mount a 996xt or similar without some significant modifications to the dash pocket (too shallow, too narrow at the back). I already have a proclip mount to hang my 396xt, which will be easy enough to swap out for the HP mount.

@Kingmobileaudio: I'm curious as to why you couldn't leave your HP installed. Because of the power issue or otherwise?

For me it don't feel practical for it to be Permanent like my 996xt is.

But I can see me using the HP with GPS for traveling

Here is my 996xt I have installed. It has 3 wires. Red is to Ignition. Orange is to Dash Lights. Black to ground.

When I turn on my head lights the scanner dims to the lowest setting. This is optional

What kind of console is that and what kind of vehicle's it in? I doubt something like that will fit for my Blazer, but that'd be perfect for what I need.

What's the part number for the bracket for the 996? The one I tried was too big. Does yours fit snug or give you any install problems? I have a Jotto in my CVPI.

Also OT but do you like the SmartSiren? Can't decide that or a Cencom...

I love my SSP. Valor plugs right in to it.

Just wish they made a Smart Touchmaster Delta.

Looking at there website it shows 425-6095

I think that is the faceplate I am using. I just went to a local shop and told them I needed a faceplate for my 996xt.

A site I went to after searching that one actually recommended another number. This is why I ask, I can't seem to get a straight answer.

Only thing I can think is to order the one if its not it have them swap it for the other one right away.

The numbers I gave. In the photo they show it as on there site looks just like the one I have.
