Default Uniden BCD996XT usb cable

I have a question will this cable work for the BCD996XT to make a straight connection? Or do I need to use the serial cable that comes with it as far as pc programming. I have a usb serial cable to I just want to use which ever one will be the best, fastest and easiest. If this cable will work does it serve the same purpose as the serial cable by plugging it in the front of the radio? Or is the front for something else? Thanks.

Although that cable looks to have the right connector to plug into the front of the scanner, it appears to be just a USB cable with ferrite choke installed (the lump). You can not just plug that into the computer straight from the scanner.

The front connection is fine to use for programing, with the correct cable into a comm port or into a Serial-USB converter.

You say you have the cable that came with it? Is it not the small connector on one end (same as in your picture above) and a DB9 on the other? If so then you should be fine with using the cable that came with it and your Serial-USB converter. That would work the same as the USB-1.

Ok thanks I didn't know if that usb cable would work and then download the drivers for the usb-1 cable to make it work. I don't have the cable from the scanner just yet it will be here Monday when the scanner arrives just trying to be prepared for anything that comes my way with this. Thanks.

I didn't have to install drivers with my Uniden cable that came with my scanner, wonder why? I have never used one before.

I would say your operating system already had the correct Prolific drivers installed so it just recognized the cable right away or it "fetched" them in the background without showing anything obvious on the desktop.

I have been playing around with a DSD in the last few days and XP fetched the drivers for a Creative X-Mod USB sound card that had never been used in that computer before and only showed minimal notification on the task bar that is was getting them. If I had blinked I almost could have missed it.

So will it be possible to use the cable in the pic with the right drivers?

If it's a serial cable yes, if not then no.
