When I worked in customer service waaaaayy back in the day, we used to laugh when the caller insisted to speak to a supervisor when they weren't satisfied with the answer us peons gave them. And it happened often. Sure we passed them off to the supervisor, but the supervisor pretty much told them the same information us first level guys had. Don't think you can always get action just because you demand to speak to a supervisor. Most of the time their hands are tied as well, and half the time, they don't care anyway.

The post below pretty much answers that question!

A dear friend of mine who worked for a while at call-center for big electric utility told me they would simply take turns as to who was going to "play supervisor" on a given day when customers were complaining and insisted on "talking with a (your) supervisor". My friend was amused by the erroneous belief that 'talking to a supervisor' would somehow make the repair go faster since neither he nor anyone else in the call-center were technicians that had hands-on with the equipment. [no, the reason he doesn't work there anymore is NOT because he got fired but because he had a stroke and died]

Let me throw this out there and I'm sure this get will get me put in the penalty box but I could really care less... Is it really necessary to have 4 pages, not to mention all the wasted server space of basically whinin and b****in about a product?? Look I know its fustrating waiting on something since we now live a "instant gratifcation" society. But enough is enough... Please let this thread die a rapid death and quit beating this dead horse. If you dont like Uniden's CS, buy a GRE (if you can find one) or some other scanner. But quit whining like little kids about this!

On a happier note, I sent my 396T in for service the second week of January. I just received an email that it is on it's way back. It had a broken data port. According to the work report they not only replaced the data port, but the speaker, keypad, display lens, and front case. Not bad for $50!

Happy Uniden customer here...I got my 396T back last Thursday and it's working fine and looking new. The repairs that I needed were: the top front of the case had cracked and was missing a corner piece when it hit the floor, and the scroll control knob was worn out.

The repair center did the following: Front case, Display lens, keypad, scroll control, and an extra bonus...they sent me a new AC adapter - advising me to discard the old one, which they said had broken off the tip inside the power jack.

So Manny and Scott, I too am a happy guy and quite satisfied with the Repair Center at Uniden.

You would think based on my description of the work! All it needed was the data port repaired. I asked for them to also replace the speaker. They took it upon themselves to also replace the other items. After 7 plus years of taking that radio with me everywhere it showed some wear and tear. I'm thrilled, it will be like getting a brand-new radio.

I really like my Home Patrol but I love that little 396. Best radio I've ever owned.

I'm happy for you Russell! I have to say, I am happy with the work done on mine as well. No issues at all. There is always that heart pounding feeling when you first fire it up. But once it got up and running, I was thrilled. Cosmetically speaking, there was no need to replace anything as I use a nylon carrying case.

Hey, as you pointed out, for $50, you can't go wrong! I feel the same way about my 396XT! I have 6 other scanners but there is something about this little guy, that I just can't put him down! I think I need help!

Thumbs up Looks like new

It sure looks new but the display window got a scratch on it when I put it into my work bag and (I think) the scanner rubbed against a screwdriver blade. So, that's going to be the next item to be repaired when it goes back to Uniden, but for now it will do nicely.

Ok, Russell, buddy, there are these things called protective cases made out of nylon, with a plastic see through window......Ummm may I suggest you pick one up perhaps?.....At this rate, you're going to be on a first name basis with the techs over there!....LOL.....

Red face Oh Manny....

what would I do without you??

You're right - there are such things that are designed to protect those scanners we hold so dear, and will prevent those nicks and scratches that I(we) seem to acquire without even trying.

Therefor, as soon as this comment is posted, I will be heading elsewhere on the net to look up this item (which I obviously need) and make this purchase happen.

Thanks, Manny, for covering my six!

Russ, it looks great. But let me ask a quick qst. Is that a plastic film over the display window? I remember mine when it was new had that over it hmmm. If it is, it might have saved it from the bad screwdriver lol.

Hi Techy, no that's not the original plastic film covering the display window, that was discarded about five minutes after I bought the scanner.

The scratched window will be the next item on the list when the scanner makes another visit to Texas, but that's a minor issue to deal with, so that trip won't be happening soon, as long as nothing else happens to the unit.

I just want to add a side note to other BCD396T or XT owners...the plastic window on the scanner isn't scratch-proof (as I just discovered) so be very careful where you put it. It isn't a hardened plastic and won't take much to mark it.

The scratched window is definitely not worth the trip. It takes about 5 minutes or less to replace. If you want, I can do it for you.

Step 1) Buy some display windows from Uniden so you have some on hand; they are very inexpensive.

Step 2) Open your scanner; remove internal screws as well.

Step 3) Pop out the display window from inside the scanner with your finger.

Step 4) Remove the tape covering the adhesive on one new window.

Step 5) While keeping the plastic covering the display window on, firmly press into position.

Step 6) Put the scanner back together.

Also, I can see the plastic film on the display window in your picture. All new display windows come with the plastic film.

Red face Well, I'll be.....

OK, you guys can color me red-faced!

Techy: you were correct on the film over the display screen, and yes, it did save the screen from that big, bad, screwdriver. So you can ignore my stupid comment that I removed it in 2006 after buying the scanner. DUH!

Jacob: you also noticed the screen had the film over it, but I appreciate your offer to put in a new one, if needed. Very kind of you, sir!

Manny: I found the nylon case with plastic window that you suggested to me. I just ordered one and will gladly put it on to protect the lil guy from any further accidents.

I really didn't notice that protective film on the display, but after both of you kept saying that you could see it, I cautiously put a fingernail under a corner of it, and VOILA, up popped a sliver of it and I easily peeled it off. BAZINGA!

So, gents...Thanks much to each of you for your help and comments. That's what makes this place so great.

Russell

By the way, it might not have been a screwdriver that caused the scratches. It seems that the display windows I buy from Uniden already have a scratched plastic cover even though they are new. The actual window isn't scratched.
