Default Extended warranty for BCD396XT?

Can anyone recommend or not recommend buying the extended warranty for the BCD396XT from Radio Shack? It costs about $75/2 years or $95/3 years and covers the usual wear/tear/defects and not accidents. I am wondering if any components have a high failure rate which make the warranty worth purchasing. I paid $400 for the scanner.

That is up to you Aaron. You never know what may happen down the road in the years you own the scanner. But the Shack seems high priced on warranties. Give this link a look over and see how cheaper the price is.

Agreed, totally. "The Crack" is simply playing the numbers game. Since they don't do the repairs themselves, they can send it out at great pain to the consumer, or simply say "That's not covered", like most insurance, and keep the money - then assume the consumer will just go away. Most will - to avoid the hassle. There is no management structure or empowerment on a local level.

I used to think pretty highly of Radio Shack until maybe 1990. I think most of us did. Now they are a joke, IMHO. So sad.

doctordialtone---I again agree with you 100%. They are staffed by "order takers" not sales associates. Remember...that is the key wording here. I don't want to hurt their busines but rather wonder how they stay in business! There management structure is a JOKE!

I have been a Consumer Reports(CR) customer for years and every year this question is asked and every year CR says it's not necessary. Customers have found that when it's time to get a repair done with their extended warranty they purchased, they find that what needs repair is not covered.

And if you use whatever equipment, appliance, electronics or product you purchased responsibly, and use it according to the supplied users manual, most of time the product lasts for years.

I did some research on Uniden's Web site about repairs out of warranty and like a previous post mentions-they do them for $50 plus $10 for shipping. That seems fair enough....and cheap enough too!

Good deal! If something breaks, I’m sure they will step right up and cover it.

I can remember leaving Disney World with the same sense of satisfaction, after I pre-purchased the “Unlimited Monorail Ride” package for $95.00 back in 2001. When I do the math, it would have cost us $64.00 in tokens, but we still think we got out of there with a great deal! I’m sure your results will be similar.

Keep us posted!

Yea the shack had some pretty cool stuff back in the day Doc. Were i live the local shack isn't to bad and one of the guys that work there has for a long time and knows his way around with the scanners. But i just wished they carried more scanner accessories that's the downfall..

There is a local shack that sells Ham equipment and scanners as well he's been in the business for quite some time now but it's small drive to get there but allot of times it well worth the Trip.! b 780

I actually meant to say I am NOT going to buy the extended warranty. I guess I should proofread to make sure all the key words are in my posts.

If you got your radio at R.S. you have 30 days to take it back if you not satisfied and if you decide after that you'd like to make and exchange for something else in a scanner you have that Option as Well that's what i was told.

You might ask and see if your local store allows that but i'm sure they would and if your a Veteran they can take 10% off your purchases...
