Red face Thinking about a Trade

I'm thinking about Taking my HP-1 Back that i got in Dec. at R.S. and Getting a 396xt for one thing a Cheaper Price as there on Sale but in doing this i will have to have it Programed or Try to Figure out how to do it my Self which i'v heard is no small Task) I have Programed Scanners before but never one like the 396 and it's Format i might have my hands full)

If i do this i will miss out on the Ease of Easy set up of the Home Patrol but i also heard that once the 396 is set up and done Correctly it's a Darn good scanning Scanner! So i have a little time to Think about it i was wondering what some of your thoughts were is it a thing i should do. or Keep the Home Patrol

One thing i wished Uniden would have done) Was i wished they would have included the BNC to SMA Adapter with the H.P.-1 that they include with the 396xt i think with it gives one's a Choice to which Antenna they want to Use and it's a Well Made Apter and it wouldn't cost that much more to include it.. With the Home Patrol if you don't like the included antenna you have to Search all over to Find an appropriate Antenna or one better that came with it To Much Monkey Business Lol

And on this Home Patrol of Mine that thing with the Digital its a little annoying when it Breaks up and i thinking that on the 396xt you have a little more of an adjustment with P25 that you can use i might be Wrong! But with the Home Patrol there isn't any that i have found Yet.!

But i Do like the Display on the Hp-1 i would Miss that) As i mentioned i have some time to Think but if it's well worth the Trade i will go with the 396xt

I was a radio engineer for over 13 years, and have been using scanners for a long time. I just got the 396 and it is one of the most sensitive receivers out there, and the most full featured one on the market. With that being said, as you stated and I'll confirm, it's no easy feat to program the first time around.

You can do a whole lot more with the 396 and it is geared more toward the advanced users, and is easier to program on the fly.

If you do exchange it just take the time to read up on it and don't let it get you to frustrated the first ten times around !

I had a 396T, sold it and moved up to the 396XT, sold it and tried a HP-1, sold it and tried a PSR-800, sold it and went back to the 396XT. Also have moved from a 396T to a 396XT for my feed. I usually buy used, and manage to make money on every sale. All of the above had their own redeeming features, but the downside for me on the HP-1 is that it wants to be a portable but is too big. A handheld HP would be interesting, but would require a large touch/color screen.

Program the 396XT yourself using Freescan and a subscription to Radioreference. You choose the system, choose the towers, choose the talkgroups, download, then lock out anything you don't want. You'll want to download all talkgroups used in your area even if you don't want to listen to them, so you can ID them and/or lock them out. Otherwise - since default is search mode - you'll receive them but won't see the name. Really pretty simple. Don't waste your money on commercial software or a programming service.

If you do...download Freescan (or buy a different programming software) i makes it alot easier..and if you have a RadioReference membership you can download directly to freescan and upload to the 396/996xts .

My opinion is the 396xt is a GREAT radio.

Default Get the 396XT....but....

Keep the Home Patrol too. Use it as your base and use the 396xt as a mobile device.
Sure, you could still use the 396xt at home and connect a different antenna to it if you'd like but having a base AND a mobile scanner would be great-but that's my opinion.....or $.02 worth since that's all I can really contribute because I'm such a new scanner user myself.

And pardon my hackjob but...
Question for bbtkd;

What do you mean when you say "choose the towers" in the above statement?
Would you mind elaborating a little more clearly or post an example of what you meant by choosing a tower?
I'd like to understand better what you're talking about because I am so new at this.
Thanks
and good luck with your decision bear780ks...whatever you choose won't be wrong, right?

I think when he stated "choose the tower" he actually meant "choose the site", which is basically the same thing.

Smile scanners

I have the 396XT i like the scanner the batteries last 4 days and works good
I have the GRE-800 use to be my mobile scanner then i got the Pro-197 for the car the GRE-800 is now my base scanner works great no more eating batteries lol.
The GRE-800 did work great in the car but was not easy to see the display i did mount the scanner on a plate on my 33MHZ lowband maxtrac remote head in the car so i was able to view it a little better.

Thanks and 73's b780ks

Bear please watch your lack of punctuation and run on sentences. It makes your posts very hard to read. Also you don't need to capitalize so much.

We try to have a 'conversational' tone here - Thanks...Mike

Hi Bear. For me-this is what I did....Near the top of this page on the left, look for "User CP" in the blue bar. Click on that. In the new window you should find along the left side column, links to get you to areas to edit your personal settings. Look for Edit Signature under Settings & Options. There you can put what you'd like to have show up at the bottom of a post every time you post something.
To get the smilie face, I just did " : ", and then " ) " (without the quotes, and put them together with no spaces).
Hope this helps

Ok i fixed the issue Mike thanks a bunch for the info. but my question wasn't answered and if you can ask ones to adjust how they write there post on here which is fine as i didn't know i haven't been on here very long even though i signed up in 09 i'm still learning the ropes.! Couldn't you please tell a fellow contributor if he or she could use a moving avatar or an emotioncon in there post. I'm a senior contributor on the Verizon forums and i do as you do on here if i need too. but if a Contributor also ask if what they can and cannot do or submit i try pointing it out to them.. Thanks for your time Mike b780

Mike,

Wow - I see that. I had to get out my inhaler to be able to follow the posts. There IS no extra charge for punctuation here on RR, right?
