Default BC780/785D Poor Airband Performance

I recently acquired two Uniden scanners, a 780 and 785D (both in excellent condition). My intentions are to use them strictly for Trunked systems and other public service related comms. However, I tested them both on my local aviation frequencies and found that the over all reception quality is quite poor compared to my ICOM IC-R7100's. Has anyone else noticed this with these radios? To be clear, they work perfectly on all other bands - even against the 7100. This is the first time I've ever owned trunking capable radios, I've always been a wide-band receiver guy ( Icom, Kenwood and Yeasu.)

Thanks
Paul

The frontend overloads a lot on these radios. I resigned to the same lousy reception till I took a guy's advice and bought an FM trap for a paultry $7 at the shack. Please look over this thread
http://forums.radioreference.com/pas...p-airband.html

it's worth $7 just to see what it'll do for you. It completely opened up 108-137 megs for me here in western San Francisco-power lines not 20' from my windows and Sutro Tower not a mile&half from me. Not to mention cellphone repeaters and pagers within blocks from me too. HTH

I have the 396,& 996xts. I am in PFDS west near St.Charles and i pick up P.E.T. quite well. Both of these radios are digital,trunking.. do you have the option of selecting AM mode when you enter the freqs? Maybe those radios are defaulting to FM settings?,,just a thought..
From here i can pick up Twr..Dep/Arv.. Clearence. And at times Ground.. i also pick up the Edacs system for the surete and crash crews. And also the other trunked system for the airlines and PTVs,..

I used to have a 780, a few yrs ago for a short time when i was in Lachine just south of the airport and it did work well back then.

Mins seems adequate comparable to other scanners, but not a big Air monitor. Then you are comparing a Ferrari , the R71000 to a Chevrolet.

I'm in VSL north of vertu near Henri B. My reception on the Icom's is excellent, but the Bearcats just sound dirty. They default to AM, so that is not an issue. They are more susceptible to front end issues and bleed over. Like I said, not too worried about the reception as these will be used from trunking.

I used to monitor YUL mostly when i was working out of Dorval cas. So we could monitor the tower when we were dispatched to the airport for incoming Alerts..
