Default BC780XLT serial port is dead

I have no idea what happened to kill it. I tried everything from USB adapters to real comports and nothing works. I can't recall if a null modem is needed but I even tried that and proscan just can't see it.

I assume the UART died inside. Anyone here have a similar experience and does anyone happen to have a schematic of one of these please?

Found a manual. Apparently it's a UPD4722 UART. Anyone have any ideas before I tear into it? I can't think of too many things to check.

The 780 is in Remote mode correct? The letters RMT should be visible in the LCD display somewhere. And of course the 780 baud rate should be at 19200 and match ProScan. I've had mine switch out of remote mode for no apparent reason on its own.

What kind of manual did you find? Service info apparently but is it a full service manual?
Have a link where you found the manual or tech info you did find? I'd like to have a copy for my aging 780 just in case!
