The 996 comes with preprogrammed freq. Easier to Read BCD996XT Pre-Programmedl Perhaps these are the ones that are driving you crazy. If so, just hit the "." and 21 while it is scanning. That will turn off 21 Alaska ALMR You should see "Alaska ALMR" as it was scanning before you turned it off, and now it should be gone. Continue with "." 22, then 23, etc until you have turned them all off and see if that solves the problem. If not try to be more specific about what systems you see flashing.

Sorry, I should have seen that. If you did not program anything but the 3 freq's, is this a used scanner? First, try deactivating all the banks(hit numbers 0-9) except the one with the 3 freq. Then, you need to go through all 100 channels in that bank and lock them out.
Is it possible it is doing a search in stead of scan?
Maybe you mean that it is coming up with a bunch of TGID's. If so, then you are in the ID search mode. If you only want certain ones, then select IDscan.

You say it is a P-25 system, On the 796d do you have the P-25 card installed and enabled in the menu ?

Sounds like (a) the frequency popping up is the voice frequency (controlled by the CC) and (b) "sounds really bad" sounds like LSM issues.... but this is just speculation.

1. What frequencies are programmed in the radio?

2. What frequencies sound good?

3. Which frequencies sound bad?

Here is the frequencys 853.10000 853.26250a 853.35000a 853.81250c I am sorry there is 4 .I was told to put thoes 4 in that all and my 996xlt has the same and it is working fine . The one that sound good is 853.81250 .But I was look at the frequenceys on the charlottle site .The ones that are poping up that sound bad are codes that are in that set of codes .

Which is the control channel (the one showing when no one is talking on the system)?
My first guess would be rebanding issues and control channel only not selected.

Charlotte / Mecklenburg County (Project 25) Trunking System, Charlotte, North Carolina - Scanner Frequencies Ok I did what you asked the ones that work good are the 853.10000 853.26250a 853.35000a 853.81250c I gess that is the close tower . The one that stay on when it scans is 853.81250c .But when it stops it pulls up any of the other frequenceys that are in that say mecklenburg .Sometimes it does stop on one of the 4 and it does sound great .So what am I doing wrong .Do I need to update my card .I have updated my scanners .
Thanks you all for all your help

FWIW, My 796d is very temperamental when it comes to having the control channel only on. It causes the volume to sporadically go up and down with each different frequency that comes up while receiving.
I have to enter all the frequencies in the system that I want to listen to and turn the control only feature off. Everything is level that way. Just a thought in trying to figure out your problem. In contrast my 996t and 396t work fine with control channel only.

I know there's been "rebanding" going on in the US, could these be the some of newer rebanded frequenies?
Which the 796 may not work on.
Try an experiment; program the voice frequenices of the trunk site your trying to monitor;
as a conventional system.
The 796 P25 card should decode the signal.

Did you program the offsets?
In rebanded systems, you need to use software to program in the offsets or it will not trunk.
