Best is in the eye of the beholder. There is a free program, which is very good, and then there are a couple of commercial progs. I happen to like the features of ARCXT , but I suspect you will be happy with FreeScan (free) . . ProScan is an other one, but I haven't tried it. ARCXT and Proscan have a full featured demo so you can decide for yourself

I acquired a 396XT and 996XT earlier this year. I had never owned a scanner before. After giving Mark's Easier To Read ( Easier to Read BCD396XT Digital Scanner Manual ) manual a quick read, downloading FreeScan ( http://www.sixspotsoftware.com/products/freescanand ) and subscribing to this site I had both programmed and running well in a couple of hour. Perhaps my lack of experience with other brands was an advantage as I had no expectations.

I use both ARC XT and ProcScan. I program with ARC XT but prefer the graphic display of ProScan on the screen of my PC to log with. While ARC XT works well I find the graphic representation of a scanner crude compared to ProScan and actually to Free Scan as well. Again you will get all kinds of opinions try them and decide for your self.

Except for my scanner being a BCT15X, I too, could repeat the above message word for word.

But maybe what got my attention was this: Perhaps my lack of experience with other brands was an advantage as I had no expectations. I had no expectations or scanner experience whatsoever.
I was rather surprised at how well the complete set-up actually went once I got started, and to the time I was finished.

The one thing I would disagree on (lol) is the "quick read" done on the easier to read manual. I read mine a couple of times and still refer back to it now and then.
