Default Uniden 996XT Shortage?

I can't find a 996XT at any of the major supply stores. Acording to Universal Radio Uniden is out of stock and it will be a couple of weeks before any get in. I checked Radio Shack,Scannermaster and Universal Radio....all out of stock!

The 'shortage' has made me wonder if perhaps the low stocks, and RS clearing there shelves, is a precursor for an updated scanner to be released soon from Uniden perhaps?

They are more scarce overall, than they used to be. In Phoenix there are none in either Fry's, none in the Radio Shacks, and HRO has none on the shelves. Fortunately you can find them on the internet, for not much more than $450 if you look carefully. I do wonder if the GRE shortage will eventually make them more scarce though.

I bought the one from HRO NH and sucked up the extra $20 cost. I was told that a shipping container of 996XT's was stolen from Uniden. That's why so many stores have had the sudden shortage on new arrivals. I got that info from a Uniden dealer.

Default Uniden 996XT Shortage?

I noticed that Upman posted this on the other thread about scanner inventory:

"We have inventory coming in every couple of weeks. Lots of unexpected demand at the moment"

Well I can tell you in my area of Michigan the City Of Flint just changed from a 30+ year old analog VHF system to Digital APCO 25 800MHz system the third week of December 2012. I talked to a guy at Radio Shack in Flint and he said his store was getting over 400 calls a week about scanners they needed and how much they cost and the stores in Flint have all run out of scanners several times over with thousands of people looking to buy scanners. He said all of the Uniden models have been selling like hot cakes at stores 30 miles away in all directions around Genesee County. So Upman, if you read this post I think your demand is going to be steady for a while.

Mike

I'll Second that at the one Local Shack store i go to they'll get a small batch of radios and when i mean small it's 3 to 4 and there Gobbled up in a week to week and half's time the last one's they had were the 996 they got 4 they're gone now and they got 4 new 396 i'd say the Time they have them won't be long as they have been moving them out as quickly as they come in..

What's driving the push for the sale's of the radios at that store is Sedgwich Co. and Wichita is going Digital by the end of the Year and there is only one store in that area that is Handling the 396 & 996 and that can actually program the scanners i was asking at 2 other Location's if they can program the Scanners they sell if the customers wanted them programmed and they said that they were no Longer allowed to do that..

So as for the Shack stores in the Wichita area my bet the Scanners they'll handle & sell the most of will be the HomePatrols as there is No programming necessary and it's a quick Sell even though it tops out at a little over $500.00 Ra

I wanted add here the area Radio Shacks in Wichita can still get & sell the 396's and if they get any 996's but it's up to the Customer to program them selves or seek out another source to have them programmed for them.. But they can still sell them..
