Default BR330T / ID Search & Store / Over Limit

I have a trunked system with no TG IDs that I am scanning with "ID SEARCH". I tried enabling the ID Search & Store feature to store new TG IDs in the current system, but kept getting the "Over Limit" message.

Thanks to this thread (search for "Over Limit"):
http://www.radioreference.com/forums...38513-p-3.html
...I discovered that I had to change "Max Auto Store" from 256 to 255.

Now...I don't really understand how this fixed the problem. Can someone offer some insight on what's going on?

Also, in the manual, the 5th paragraph on p. 106 mentions "When you select a search range, the scanner looks for active talkgroup IDs within that range..."

Where do you define TG IDs in a search range...? I've only defined lower and upper frequencies in search ranges (i.e. search 30 to 40 MHz). I think I'm missing some concept here.

Hi,
The 255 limit for talkgroup autostore applies to all the new Uniden scanners, not sure why but for some reason 256 does not work but 255 does.

What is means with the search ranges is that it will search for all talkgroup ID's (except ones that you have locked out) and store them for you.

Well I read the same page and got same idea. To me I got the understanding that you can enter in TG ranges within a specific system you choose to do an "ID SEARCH AND STORE".

I don't believe you can do this. The paragraph is not worded that great, or it's becuase I'm just stupid...........one or the other is possible. Hey! I should give that Foxworthy gameshow a shot!

Regards,
Richster.

Right! I too don't understand how you can make a search range for TG IDs.

Also still looking for the "why" regarding max auto store = 255.

I compare this anomoly to the first time I was learning how to program Commodore "PET" business machines using assembly language. You got a few things done by "poking addresses". The number range used for poking a specific address was 0-255. I asked the Prof why 255? Why not 256 which is a power of 2? I remember he said that's just the way it is. Hell the memory on my P120 (don't laugh it still runs trunker) comes up as 65535KB, why not 36? Then I remembered what my Prof said.

The menu on the 330T should be re written so that 255 is the maximum limit and not 256. When programming computers was concerned 20 years ago, 256 was bad news and got you some sort of error message. I guess things don't change.

Regards,
Richster.

Unless I'm mistaken, there are 256 memory locations. The catch is that they are usually numbered 0-255 instead of 1-256. (the same with 65535).

Ok, I get the 0-255 / 1-256 thing. As pointed out above, and as a rhetorical question: why is 256 the default?

Any ideas about this TG "search range"?
