Question BCD396T- Need HELP programing Battle Creek, MI

Hi all and good morning.

I just received my BCD396T last monday. Man is this thing hard to program or what? I am trying to listen to Battle Creek MI police (APCO P25). I can only hear them some of the time. The rest of the time, I hear nothing but garbuld sounds, like it is being encrypted.
I talked to the people at radioshack yesterday, and they said Battle Creek police has a button on their radio that they can push to encrypt their transmisions. Does any know if this is true or not? I have tried to adjust the digital RES TIME and GAIN, but not luck, also I have the P25 level is set to auto.
Oh yeah, I also have one idea what I am doing, at least with this scanner.

Thanks
Bill

It's not a button - almost all Battle Creek PD transmissions are encrypted. You can't hear them now nor will you in the future. You'll see the "E" desgination in the database next to all the BTL talkgroups.

That's what i have been hearing. Do you think there will be a mod for the BCD396T in the future?

Not for an Encrypted channel, it's just not legal to listen to one. Besides certain types of encryption are near impossible to crack without the proper key or codes.

You will NEVER hear any encrypted channel. Ever. Never.

Unless you work for the agency using said encryption and have the proper radio equipment and authorization. Bottom line, your not going to hear anything that's encrypted on your 396, "in the clear".

Even then I doubt it, I don't think MPSCS allows agencies to give radios to people for personal takehome use unless it's required for their job.

wcmay,

What you're experiencing is some of the users that don't have their encryption button turned on, or they don't realize they don't have it turned on. The same type of thing happens here where I'm at on an USAF base. The Security Forces use APCO25 Motorola XTS5000's and some times SOME of the transmissions are all garbled, but the other person they're talking to is in the clear in P25. Their radios will always decode encrypted transmissions even if they aren't transmitting in encrypted. So thats why they might not realize they're not transmitting encrypted.

There is absolutely no way on earth that any scanner manufacture will EVER EVER EVER get the encryption technology to decode it. You're S.O.L! The only way for you to intercept them when encrypted is to obtain a radio just like they use, and make sure it has the "several thousands of dollars" of encryption option installed, and then you'll have to know someone on the inside (at the radio shop) who would be willing to jeopardize their job just to program the proper key into your several thousand dollar radio.

That or STEAL one of their radios and hope they don't send out the code to turn it off, effectively turning it into a huge chunk of worthless plastic.

We also have them here in (KBTL) Battle Creek, MI. Nice.
