HomePatrol-1 does not use Prolific drivers. USB-1 uses the real Prolific chipset, and all drivers work just fine. This problem is only going to affect knock-off USB-->RS232 adapters that are using counterfeit versions of the Prolific PL2303 chipset.

I am a little reluctant to install the new driver after your experience. What radios & USB-Serial adapters are you experiencing the problem with. Are experiencing the problem with the HomePatrol if you have one? I also have the Uniden USB-1 cable on my 996XT.

I'm using a Monoprice adapter I got a few years ago and usb programing cable I use to program cable that has a prolific chip my icom radio. I'm guessing they are counterfeit

TIP: DO NOT PLUG THE CABLE INTO YOUR COMPUTER FOR THE FIRST TIME WHILE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. In Windows 7 at least, windows will automatically connect with windows update and download a prolific driver when you plug in the cable. This driver does not work and you will get the Error 10 code. If this has happened to you, uninstall the driver. And proceed as below.

Do this the first time plugging in the cable or after uninstalling a non-working driver as above:

Download the following driver...and ignore the fact that it is labeled a 'vista' driver:

Unzip the file and DISCONNECT your computer from the internet. Install the driver from the file you just unzipped. Plug in your cable and you should be good to go. Reconnect to the internet.

I just went through an event with obtaining drivers for a three year old serial adapter to use with the included serial cable with my BCD396T. I had not done the final firmware update (v3.01 to v3.02.02), nor had I done any programming (with software) in those three years, so I wanted to try FreeSCAN. Had no problem obtaining the drivers and installing (on a Win 7 machine). Problem was, it worked with FreeSCAN but not with the firmware update, so I had to revert to my old XP machine with the serial port. Absolutely no problems with the firmware update using that. I hadn't heard any comment in this thread about anything other than use with programming software, so I thought I'd add that.
