After my attempt to get a 996XT for $262 blew up in my face, I learned that Radio Shack pricing is region-specific/store-specific and is based on previous sales. If the store in question has a history of successfully selling the scanner you want, the closeout price will be higher than the closeout price at a store which had a hard time moving them off the shelf ... and having it sent to your local store from another doesn't mean you'll get the lower price from the distant store.

I don't think it's fair to the consumer, but that's the way it is.

Sounds more like your bitter that you didn't get one. I paid on the high end for my discounted 996xt ($260) and I still consider it a hell of a deal, I don't lose sleep over the fact that others got it for lower than that.

Why do you say that? The store that sent it to my local store said the price was $262, and I was more than happy to pay that price for it. It was the regional manager who refused to play ball and said I had to pay an inflated price of $370 for it. I was more than happy to buy it for $262 - as you said, $262 is a hell of a deal, and that's why I wanted it. But it didn't work out, and there's no bitterness on my part. It is just a scanner, after all.

Movin' on ...

Well, I ended up getting one. The store I called had one and it listed at $349. When they rang it up, $188! If you are calling around, tell them to ring it up and give you the clearance price.

Default Uniden radios on sale at RadioShack

I just wanted to thank everyone for this thread. I just picked up another BCD996XT for $100.86 with tax! I'm starting to like Radio Shack again.

There is only 1 left in the Phoenix area, but it is still $262.

Talking

I also picked up a BCD996XT at a Radio Shack in St Louis today for $101.45 with tax. I was told it was the last one in stores locally. (I tried to pick up two)

Odd thing about the price. The SKU number entered first showed it on sale for $349.00. However it was also tagged (in their computer) for another 25% clearance price cut which brought it to around $265.00 or so. When the salesperson rang it up the cost was $124.47! BUT ... there was a 25% off clearance price added to that! Which ended up being a grand total price of $93.35 before taxes! ! ! ! !

Wow !

The last two I picked up recently were marked @ $124. Once I added $10 coupon and military discount, they cost me $108 each out the door.

Looks like someone is making a pretty good profit.

Last week I was driving and came across four radio shacks, one independent from east side to west side of MI in the middle portion. Either they didn't have any left or ones that did - a 396XT are $400 as they are also in my immediate area.

We have 6 radio shack corporate stores in the area, 2 more independents, same scenario mostly they don't have em anymore and ones that do only have a 396XT for $400. Local rs manager says he doesn't see any 996XT's in his computer search as of a couple weeks ago.
