Yes - as long as it identifies itself as a high current charger to the scanner.

Is a standard 5V/1A USB charger sufficient to run the scanner and/or charge the batteries?

DO NOT....Use your radio as a battery charger...
there are countless reports from users regarding
problems that arise,including destroying radios
when charging batts in their handhelds..

Yes,a standard 5v phone adapter will supply the
needed juice for your 436..

I use a power strip,It has 2 USB/Charger outlets
along with 4 120V outlets..I use it for my my 996XT
15X,psr410 and the home power supply for my 436HP..

I,along with most others have a separate bat charger
for my psr500 & 436HP batts....

Save yourself a future headache and get an external
charger!

Just my humble of humblest opinions..

Cheers!

Thanks for the advice. I'm guessing because it only charges for a fixed time and doesn't monitor the actual charge level, so you can overcharge and cause heat and possible fire?

I do have an external charger but I'm lazy and don't want to take the batteries out of the unit to charge them, then pull them out and pop them back in. Hassle.

Precicely...You dont want than nice 436 to be a gooey mess!

It also dose not have to be just timing issue,,If a cell goes bad and overheats...You gotta problem!

Hope you enjoy the 436..I LOVE mine..its like 10 scanners in one...

Nope. I'm pretty sure I saw a post from UPMan saying that the 5V 1 Amp USB didn't supply enough power to do both.

Standard USB spec is 500 mA. That is enough to charge OR operate. So, a 1000 mA supply should be able to handle both as long as it identifies as a high current supply.
