BCD436HP: Quick Key Display - Department Hidden

On the BCD436HP screen, the Favorites list and the Systems list are displayed, but the Department list is hidden. See Example below:

F0:0123******
S0:01234*6789
_____________
D0:012345**89 <This part is actually hidden

The only way too see the Department list is to press the Function key when in scan mode.

Maybe there could be some way to make it so that the Department list is always displayed, as well. I know this would take away from some of the real estate on the rest of the screen, but it seems like there is enough space. If not, possibly a way to shift it so that the System list and Department list are displayed only, when toggled as such.

That's the way it works. The DQK status is only shown by pressing the FUNC button.

Yes, I know; hence, my suggestion.

I am less interested in seeing what "Favorite" I'm and more interested in what "Department" I'm on. I'd like to have a way to make it so I always see the System and Department, and have to press "Function" to see the "Favorite." What I'd like is for it to be my option.

Sorry. I thought it was a comment, not a suggestion.

Personally, I would like to see the entire display customizable to cover not only what you suggested, but everything else.

Absolutely! The 436 has a nice large display but it delivers so little information. The wasted space is far greater than the useful space.

I use long tags, so my space isn't wasted so much. I agree the RR policy which abbreviates the tags makes for a lot of "wasted space", but that is nothing Uniden can change. Only RR can restore the longer descriptions which would utilize the space better.

I find the longer descriptions worthless. I would prefer that uniden use the alpha tag instead of the descriptions. Is a PS officer going to say switch to "Task Force Countywide 1" or switch to "TFX1"? If I was scanning a system I had never heard before, I would feel different but I am familiar with the system I listen to and the tags are the most useful since that is how everyone on the system refers to channels.

I think it should be a user selectable option in Sentinel where the user can make either the default for the alpha tag part.

Sometimes I like the longer descriptions and sometimes I like the shorter ones so it would be nice to let the user decide.

I suppose the database download would be a bit larger as it would need to contain both the Alpha Tag and Description fields unless Uniden had both versions on their DB update site and Sentinel would only download the one you have selected.
What is a full database size using the longer description field, somewhere in the 20+ MByte range maybe. I bet including the shorter Alpha Tag field would not increase the total download size more than a few MBytes.
I always thought Uniden had access to the full database and all fields and the way they deliver it via Sentinel depends on how they parse the data and send it to the end user each Monday.
Maybe I'm wrong on that and it is dictated by RR.

Yes, Sentinel should allow the choice of Alpha tag or description. That is how Freescan works.

I added some alpha tags in addition to description, as in the LASO example below:

A-TAC 1-N - North County Tactical
A-TAC 2-W - West County Tactical
A-TAC 3-E - East County Tactical
A-TAC 4-S - South County Tactical

A lot of work, though, to go through and do it all manually.

I'd like to see a default tab for whenever you add systems, for example the TG'S would sorted by their TGID'S ascending. But not only for this but some other features, like in EZ Scan you can select multiple items and give them the same alert, LED configuration, or volume offset.

ARC536 software uses Alpha Tags, allows TGID sorting, and selecting multiple items for same alert, led config, volume offset etc. Don't you know you have to pay to do things like customize as you see fit?! ;-) Unfortunate I know, but been that way since my 396t. Manufacturer software is typically lmited. Third parties seem to get it right.

Yea, but ironically EZ Scan does that and it's free. I guess I've just been used to GRE for a while. Maybe Whistler and Uniden should merge....

Can sort TG's in Sentinel, can also do multiple volume off set and alerts - some by cut & paste

LeSueurC thats not a good wish

I can see it now
If Whistler and Uniden merged we would havta wait 4 years (from time of announcement) for a broken featured scanner, and another 4 to get it right, plus it would change the name of l/o and avoid to Skip and only have the number 1-3 keys and would have a bright display that we would all agreed would be so blinding we wouldn't be able to see the small font, think 500lumen. and its audio would be so clear and loud it would be ear piercing, we would all talk about cardboard speaker covers to muffle the sound, since the merger, they got everything T O right.

I second this motion!

I feel it is more important to have the Departments displayed rather than the Favorites. I wouldn't mind if it was reversed, whereby you press Func to view the Favorites rather than Departments. Simply because I tend to toggle the Departments regularly, but favorites occasionally. Was this issue ever addressed in any firmware updates with a switch somewhere?

At a minimum it would be good to increase the time the Departments are displayed when pressing the Func button, or have this as a user selectable time.

Personally, I would like to have all 100 FLQKs, 100 SQKs in each, and 100 Site/DQKs in each System shown, but it always only shows the first ten.... :D

Not marginalizing the request. I'm always for user options.

All my text tags are prepended with the respective QK, so I can always see which is being received if that is the core issue.

I just started setting up my Favorites Lists in Sentinel and did this as well. I would have liked to be able to assign Quick Keys to individual channels within a department so it would be possible to only scan "working" incident channels within an department, but I don't think that's possible.

I'm just getting my feet wet with Sentinel and don't know if my setup is going to work, since I don't have the radio yet. Being inexperienced with computer technology in general, and programming scanners doesn't help.

You can create a new department(s) with the customized channels you want (or just one)..and label it as you want..then you can turn them on and off with a QK
