The gender changer is not needed if your DB9 is Female, since the connector on the scanner is Male. It might be needed only to make your specific cable fit, if you have the "right" cable, you can skip the part about the gender changer.
I don't have my Manuals in front of me but my memory says "updating firmware" [which is not done often of course] is the One thing that can not be done from the Rear. Double check that, my memory might be faulty.

Yes I believe I saw something about fire ware not being able to be done with the rear one,I only update my corrections I do on freescan and upload onto the scanner,but they said (I don't know if you have one) you may need a null modem adapter

Ok I bought a USB to db9 serial cord and downloaded the driver and hooked it up to the scanner to upload from free scan to the scanner 996xt and it comes up with a error message the serial port could not be opened,,the baud rate for the rear port and the free scan are set the same,any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I *think* you need a null modem connection to connect a PC to the rear port - someone please correct me if I'm wrong here...Mike

Ok one I have another cord I got today to use my remote head for the 996 xt it's a 3.5 mm to db9 serial and I tried it today and the remote head is saying scanner unconnected,I don't know what's up with this serial port

Is the cable wired correctly? I am not aware of a cable made to that configuration...

Yes it's wired correctly ,and the serial cable fits

Ok here's an update I bought annul modem adapter and tried it with the remote head and the serial cable I bought and it works now. I'm happy now. Lol
