It has been a while since I listened, but the "media bands" 450-451 and 161-162 have been pretty quiet. I think the news guys mostly use cell phones & Nextel phones. It has been a long time since I heard the media coordinating stories or dispatching on the media freqs like they used to years ago.

I think in most air operations, there is a pilot and a reporter. The pilot will use regular air-air and air to ground freqs to coordinate with other aircraft as he flies to the destinations. The reporter probably uses cell or nextel to coordinate. But don't let me stop you from searching the bands. They may also use rented space on business trunked systems where their licenses will not show up. The best time to search would be during major events and during live TV news. Most traffic reports are done from looking at the traffic cams - watching from the air is too expensive.

Let me know if you find any good freqs.

In Los Angeles and San Diego every TV station with an air unit communicates on their licensed frqs. between 450-451 and 455-456 MHz. KNBC TV 4 L.A. uses 161.76 for their air unit.

I agree. Just trying to point out that in the majority of places in the U.S. that I have visited and listened to w/my scanner, I have heard IFB, ops, & air units use the frqs. between 450-451 MHz. I can check in SLC the next time I visit to see if that media market area does the same. This is where they are primarily licensed in SLC.

Sky 2 is on 450.1125. Chopper 5 is on 450.250. Both frequencies also have traffic from various cameramen. 450.250 is usually a constant broadcast during newstime.

A few days ago there was a major hostage/murder/SWAT operation in Provo. A friend, a few blocks away, said that ALL the media was there with several helicopters. I was searching the 450-451 range and 161-162 range for about half an hour and there was no traffic at all during the event (except the constant broadcast of one of the channels - just standard TV audio of the normal programming, not news stuff).

Can anyone confirm that they have heard news dispatching or reporter 'banter', discussion, or actual live UNEDITED news broadcasts on these bands recently?

I guaruntee sky 2 is on 450.1125 and Chopper 5 is on 450.250. Unfortuantely, there is a lot of other traffic on these channels too. You can usually hear the acutal news show in the background of 450.250. I have listened to Ksl telling Chopper 5 that "the other helicopter" is showing better footage, and telling them where to direct their camera.
