"'Technologically, it is going to be unbelievable,' Chapman said. "Going forward, some of [Salt Lake City’s] technology will be far beyond that currently of VECC.'

By partnering with Salt Lake City, Sandy will be able to transfer to digital radio service. The Utah Communications Area Network provides a majority of scanner radio service to counties statewide but is still transitioning from analog."

So what is this "digital radio service" that the article refers to? Salt Lake City's AC33 system is analog right now. Does this mean that the city is going digital or just the Sandy City portion of it will be digital?

"Scanner services" ??????????? Does that mean they will replace the LCD screen on my PSR-600? Will I be able to buy a scanner from them? I wonder what brands they will carry.

Confusing. Are they dumping both VECC and UCAN, or will they stay on UCAN but be dispatched from the SLC PSAP?

Also, what do they hope to gain from all that money spent on P-25 capable radios? The ability to encrypt is the only real difference. Perhaps some salesman has made some grandiose promises...and a fat commission.

Since SLCPD and UCAN went in together on the P25 equipment obviously UCAN is involved.

Most departments have already begun switching to P25 capable radios, the article probably didn't get a real accurate representation if what is already in place.

There is a quality improvement as well.

Bottom line though is Sandy will save $200,000 a year, SLCPD is getting all new equipment in their new building, thus the switch for them.
