Default Volmet n.y

A good catch from here on the west coast at 0200Z (6:00PM-PST) on 10051KHz-USB it is a VOLMET aviation weather station. Never noticed it right off the WWV frequency.

Yes.....it is a little easier to log here in Michigan. But next time listen a little longer next time as Gander Radio NFLD, Canada shares this same frequency and usually broadcast either previous or following the New York Radio broadcast.

Wow good for you so what kind of whip was it and when did you catch it? What were they saying in the transmission?

A volmet station is a weather station, in some ways not too different from your NOAA station. In fact, the word 'volmet' is a contraction of 2 French words that translates to 'Flying weather' - and that's exactly the kind of traffic a volmet transmits.

I've used volmets in the past to gauge propagation conditions. If I can't hear NY or Gander very well, propagation (at least here on the East Coast) isn't doing well. 73 Mike

I still would like DPD1's answer, Mike. Oh, and if there were times you didnt hear a station on the east coast, from your location...on the east coast, then I guess my getting it here on the west coast IS a pretty good catch, right?

Yes, not bad. Higher frequency propagation should improve somewhat now that we are getting closer to the summer months. C'mon sunspots! 73 Mike

They were just doing the listings for various fields. It was the standard whip on a G5. Think I stumbled onto it while looking for something else. It was indoors too, in an urban area. Kind of a miracle I could hear it. But it faded within an hour or so. Think I heard it one other time.
