8.419.00Khz
CW Message repeating several times: ._ _ . _ . . _ _ _
This CW was followed several times by a two or three second long "chirp" and then it stopped and now all I hear is on-going digital type "chirps" repeating in succession.
Edit: The same pattern is back again. Hearing this in Chicago, Ill just FYI. Mode is in USB.

I suspect what you are hearing is what is referred to as an idle marker. This is a marine station sending its ID, then SITOR-A idle bursts, indicating that the station is available for traffic 73 Mike

The station ID is PDO, if that helps anyone to figure out where it is located.
BTW, what you apparently are hearing is Morse Code in USB mode on your receiver, not "CW." CW is an emission mode. Morse Code is a signalling format consisting of dots and dashes that can be sent via several emission modes.
A ham should know this. We also used to have to be able to decode Morse by ourselves.

I suspect this was transcribed incorrectly, but in any case - a quick sweep of the UDXF list shows WLO Alabama and PPR Rio deJaniero Radio Brazil on or near this frequency 73 Mike

It's WLO, New Orleans.
Using the term "CW" is perfectly acceptable. Everyone know's it refers to the Morse Code. Is there any other code used??? The American Code perhaps? Nope.

Other code? You mean besides ASCII, Baudot, etc.?
WLO does make more sense. Character spacing would have helped.

Actually there are some variants for other languages, such as Chinese and Russian, and one could make an argument that cut numbers (commonly found in the HF spy/numbers game) is yet another variant.

Even if I'm talking to you on the radio on SSB , we're speaking Martian, and I say "go to CW", you'll know what I mean. (at least that's my assumption! LOL )
