Default Shannon Volmet

Last week I obtained a Icom 718 HF Transceiver after doing a trade. All I can say is WOW, this radio is great.... Last night at 0120 (Central) time I was able to hear Shannon Volmet on 5.505 signal was weak but could make out everything she said. I am using a I Max 2000 10 meter antenna at about 39 feet. I really love to hear areo and other utility stations. Anyone have some other suggestions for other stations to try and moniter?

You could also try 5450 and 11253 for RAF volmet (the same location as Shannon volmet). Occasionally, Shannon will barely come in while RAF is loud and clear at my location.

Some NAT/CAR freqs to try include:

2899, 3455, 5616, 5649, 5598, 5550, 6577

You have a lot to choose from in the wiki, but the above tend to be pretty active during the evening hours. You might hear a mix of Gander, New York, Shanwick and Santa Maria (especially on 5598 in the evening).

Indeed - this link is a tad old, but it's a good place to start for VOLMET stations...

SW Volmet Broadcasts

In addition to the MWARA freqs listed in the wiki, you should consider joining the Utility DXers Forum on Yahoo where lots of this kind of stuff is discussed. You might even find a more up to date VOLMET listing...

UDXF : Utility DXers Forum

Finally a 10 meter antenna will certainly work as a receiving antenna, but less efficiently as you move further and further away from its designed frequency. If you want to hear more - and with propagation as cruddy as it is lately, a better antenna brings better results - you might want to look at some of the designs in our HF antennas wiki...

A few years ago, I think it was Shannon that used to send a QSL that had an authentic recipe for Irish Coffee on it. Just think - a QSL that can make you feel good <HI> 73 Mike

I listen to Shannon Volmet regularly on both my DX-400 and DX-440, 3413 kHz and 5505 kHz. Mainly I tune into it just to make sure reception is as it should be.

Another Volmet across the ocean is on 5450 kHz, Royal Air Force from Witney UK, which I believe is London or near London. You should be able to clearly hear that one too.
