Default Unusual reception

A few days ago, spinning the dial on my G5, I stopped on HFDL 6661 and was impressed with some of the extremley strong and frequent bursts. Sounded like a bad case of intestinal gas !!! I don't have any of the decoders, but I kept listening anyway. Here's the unusual part - I did NOT have any scanners on, but I did receive YYZ (118.35) final approach pilots contacting the ATC. I heard three different aircraft, the clearest one saying "Air Canada 901 cleared to land 24 R". I looked out my window and there she was. Used my digicam to record this unusual reception.

How is this possible, since the G5 does not have airband ?

Probably overloading or an image. Sounds like you're very close to the airport or a remote comm outlet. The transmitters in the Tower are usually pretty hot.

Cool

Yup, likely an overload of the IF of your G5 receiver. Portable SW radios don't have the extra circuitry to reject severe RF. (Kind of like sticking a portable CB radio and transmitting. You'll probably hear yourself on several frequencies as the RF will just overload the receiver.)

I get IF overload interference on my g5 from local AM stations during the day. 1040 - 1080 are the most obvious. Images are one of the very few problems I've found with G5. Seems to be a common issue.

Thanks for the replies. I'm fairly close to the airport and on good days I do receive both sides. I've had my G5 well over a year and this is the first occurance of this reception.
