Nope, you're going to need to dig a little - those 'wierd noises' you heard might be ALE. There are packages available to decode this - PC-ALE and MultiPSK being but two of them. This article has some links..,

One thing ALE does very well is that it assists an operator in finding an optimum HF frequency in a path. Unfortunately we as hobby folks don't have access to that algorithm (AFAIK), so you need to check each frequency, wait for a squawk and see if an operator connects.
That is only one posssibility, of course...
