There have been several Russian logs - some may be related to the Ukranian crisis - reported on the UDXF Yahoo group as well...Mike

Hi all, where ever you are.

Anyone in and around Europe may be aware of a disagreement out in the east of the continent. It would be interesting if anyone picked up any comms on HF related to this. I know that most tactical stuff will be encrypted and go via satellite but HF is still used a lot given the size of some of the areas involved.

Below is a list of a few frequencies that could be used should the *******s come out (at 03:00GMT March 4th)

As reported on another thread, the UDXF Yahoo group has had several pertinent HF loggings recently

Like I said, check out the UDXF Yahoo group. That's where you will find all the latest freqs being reported

Mike, why do we have to go to Yahoo? Why can't there be some discussion here where we are already members?

We can - but continually asking the same question, with the same answer, is the same result. The UDXF is catching many of the newer frequencies simply because they are more world-wide than we are.

Providing additional resources and frequencies are welcome in this thread. I'm moving this to the Utility forum and stickying it temporarily until the crisis is resolved.

There are 2 or 3 resources already reported in this thread. Feel free to provide more. Mike

For those that aren't familiar with the UDXF Yahoo group...

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/UDXF/conversations/messages

They've got a few members in and around that area so let's see what they get. And I'm willing to bet the folks running the blogs are also watching groups like these...'nuff said

If you have additional freqs, questions or resources, post them here. No sense in having fragmented threads on the same subject.

Onward...

Good Question - and in fact there are quite a few. We have a few of these listed here

Live Tunable Receivers - The RadioReference Wiki

Let's concentrate on those that have European sites since they'd be better placed, propagationally speaking. WebSDR is very popular, but these other sites also qualify (their links are in the above article);

- SDR Radio Over Internet
- Perseus Servers (these are sites that are dedicated users of the popular Perseus SDR)
- Global Tuners

Many require a (free) pre registration before you can use them

If you know of other Euro-based HF online receivers, speak up...Mike

With this situation, it's very hard to suggest just one frequency would be involved. Clearly that's not true.

But first you must understand something about HF propagation. What range of freqs you want to check is largely dependent on when the US and Ukraine are in darkness or daylight. A good basic rule is below 10 Mhz or so at night, above this during the day (but that still leaves a lot of territory). This site - which uses Flash, by the way - is a good place to start learning...

Propagation Primer - Flash Movie by AE4RV

and this wiki article has some online maps you can use...

HF Propagation - The RadioReference Wiki

Many will set up lists of freqs that can be checked (I hesitate to use the word 'scan', although that's essentially what you're doing) if you are using a PC with your radio. It's catch as catch can at this point
