Your computer is probably too fast for the software, and it may not be getting along with the OS either. Could be COM port conflicts amongst other things. What software version are you using? What is your hardware configuration? Need more information.
I have a Pentium 75 IBM PC running Windows 95 that I use to run CE44 for the VX-160/VX-180 (rebooting in MS-DOS mode) and it works great. That's the thing with these older DOS-based programs, you can't have too much computer and need a fairly basic hardware configuration. Keeping things simple will really be a benefit for that kind of thing.
