Default Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) Getting Tait MPT1327 System

Huh??? Or should I ask why?

Virginia Electric Cooperative Chooses Tait Radio Communications' MPT1327 Network For Flexible Voice And Data Handling

Tait Radio Communications, along with its partner the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC), has been awarded a contract by Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) November 27, 2007 -- Tait Radio Communications, along with its partner the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC), has been awarded a contract by Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) in Fredericksburg, Virginia to engineer, furnish and install a TaitNet MPT1327 network solution. The network will be 22OMHz and will encompass five sites along with unique TaitNet redundancy features to assure network availability.

According to Bill Fredrickson, president of Tait Radio Communications North America, Inc., the TaitNet MPT1327 system was chosen by REC for its flexibility to handle the voice and data/AVL solution needs that the Cooperative required. With the contract in place, Tait expects installation of the system to begin in the fourth quarter of 2007 with completion planned for 2008.

The funny thing is that they licensed a slew of 153 MHz freqs several months ago. I wonder how these will fit in with the supposed 220 MHz system...?

Unless I'm missing something, this doesn't sound like a narrow band system. When 220-222 MHz was reallocated from the amateur service 10+ years ago, the use of the band was for "land mobile narrow band technologies".

That's what I thought. There were some systems on the air in DC for a while, I think they may have been trunked? Wasn't that the narrowband SSB-like modulation, or SSB with a slight carrier or something?

I worked on a few REC radios back in the day, they were mostly old GE TPL VHF radios, very hateful to work on!

I've got a strong MPT-1327 control channel on 217.6325. It must be coming from very close to my location in Fredericksburg.

I'm also hearing what sounds like mic key-ups on 217.8575 every few seconds. Just heard a callsign (in Morse) on this frequency, but I don't know Morse.

Can you post a .wav file of the ID? I'm sure some of us can read that for you. At least George and I can.

217.8575 did not have key-ups today, so I didn't bother checking for callsign on that frequency. However, I've heard a callsign on 217.6325, so I recorded it for about 23 minutes this afternoon. No callsign in that time. Will try again later.

Thanks for offering to read the Morse.

I may have to slow it down ;-) but I can still copy. I keep threatening myself with pulling out the old key and getting on the 40 meter novice band!

The Rappahannock Electric Cooperative MPT-1327 trunked system was up and running with voice during Hanna on Saturday. I was able to copy three or four sites from my location in Fredericksburg. The system is obviously networked, as multiple sites were transmitting the same voice traffic. The audio quality was good, but there was sometimes a noticeable "echo" in the background. There were also many "touch telephone" sounds--I'm not sure if this is something inherent in MPT-1327.

By the way, the 153.4100 [156.7] and 153.7100 [156.7] frequencies appear to be obsolete.
