One man was arrested after deputies said he tried to kill a Boone County man.
Dale Edward Lowther, Jr., 33, of Van was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
The victim, Gay Hubbard of Van, was shot multiple times in the back with a .22-caliber firearm while driving along County Route 5 in the Williams Mountain area Thursday night, Boone County Chief Deputy Chad Barker said. Hubbard was in a Charleston hospital in critical condition.
Officers originally responded to reports of the shooting and a man who had been run over by a vehicle, Barker said.
Lowther told deputies that he had been struck multiple times by a vehicle driven by Hubbard, before the shooting, but deputies were able to determine that was not true, Barker said. Deputies believe Lowther fired about 10 shots.
Lowther was arraigned Friday morning in Boone County Magistrate Court and his bond was set at $200,000 - property only.
