I-79 Trip
Well Hello Everybody, Today I had to go to Clarksburg for a Dispatcher class. While being a passenger I had the chance to check the WVSIRN sites along I-79. It was a lot of fun. Starting off, before leaving Kanawha County, I check the Clendenin site 2-004, running good. Then the Elmira site 1-014, running good. While passing the 19 South exit on I-79, I picked up Webster Springs site 1-035, running good. Next the Gassaway site 1-024, running good. Then there was nothing on the Flatwoods site. I come on up to the Burnsville site 1-013, running good. The Weston site 1-036 was running good but the CC was on 453.26250 instead of 460.23750. So I changed that in the Data Base. Meanwhile the Buckhannon site 1-037, was running good. I started picking up the Phillippi site 1-019, good signal but the site number would not come up on my Pro-106. Also while passing the 99 mile marker ( Buckhannon Exit ) I picked up the Elkins site 1-022, good and clear. Ok then there was the McWhorter site 1-012, was running good. At this time I started picking up the Salem site 1-005, running good. Then I was picking up the Mannington site 1-018, it was coming in at at 3 bars. Finally the Clarksburg site 1-001, nice and clear. It was a good trip up and back, Lots of radio traffic and beautiful weather.

Just as Bert has already stated Thank You Jess for confirming that info! It seems like you can receive a lot of sites at the 57 exit off I79 & 19. Seems to be a good "hot spot" for a lot of activity. I've picked up the Elkins cc just off that exit before in the past but as soons as you start down the hill headed for Chas you lose it. Also it seems as if the Webster Site has better coverage over there than here where I'm at lol. I wasn't aware of a site in Flatwoods I wonder when it's supposed to be operational?

Bubba did a fine job and I understand that Braxton County supposedly is on line with the SIRN. Although I cannot say for certain if they are simulcasting old legacy stuff or not.

The only simulcast I heard was Clarksburg PD, they were on the conventional and the TG at the same time.

I haven't heard any simulcasts as of yet. Fire is still on lowband & Law/EMS is on VHF. The only SIRN activity I've heard from them is their 911 TG a couple times.

Congrats! UT is great for monitoring many things. However, if you are specifically monitoring P25 systems, I think Pro96Com is preferable. That's just my take.

Earlier while driving home I caught Fayette Co Deputies communicating with each other about directions to a particular location for a call. I think it was TG 5223 but I'm not 100% sure. I tried to catch a glimpse while driving so I had to look fast.
Bert looks like Fayette is starting to come alive

I just now fixed my Pro96Com issues thanks to a thread on access violation errors running it. It now works like a charm!

Dunbar Fire
Anyone that is keeping up on Kanawha County, Dunbar Fire has switched their PL code to DPL 025. I wondered why I had not been picking them up.

It appears that the 1st of the New Year will bring some changes to the radio nets in WV (and maybe nationwide). The rumor has it, Fire & EMS operations may be leaving the P25 system because of operational issues. Based on some of the scuttlebutt circulating, and the confirmed action of Berkeley Co’s re-programming of their pagers and radios to Low band operation, effective 1/1/13. BC Central has also started simile-casting LE “all-calls” on SP’s low band channel (42.10 MHz).
Based on conversations, folks are saying it is the result of a change in DHS’s inoperability needs and the P-25 failures that have been found.
Anyone with any information?

I don't see the Interop report really having much effect on the SIRN/WVIRP. That was more or less a OIG report for US DHS use only.
Now with that being said, there was a lot of agency complaints, Marion, Mon county and few others due to the IRP failure during the summer windstorm. As we have all seen many agencies have abandoned low band and vhf high due to the promises of the IRP. When the switches went down during the summer wind storm many first responders had no radio contact period as everyone depended on computer controlled smartzone omnilink 9600 trunking vs a conventional repeater.
The question I ask is low band subject to narrowband FCC requirements as well? Plus you have to think realistically is there that many manufactures that even make low band radios any more. Although low band was once king in WV. I can't see them going back there. But I do see see the WVSP maintaining their system due to lack of IRP coverage in some counties.
