For me (and it is personnal) I found the 600 easier to program manually (less steps). But in any case, to really enjoy it and that is true for all the newer dynamic memory style scanners, a software is the way to go. Not that manually it is impossible, but you'll gain a lot of precious time with a software.
For software, I use WIN500 for programming it which I find more friendly user than ARC500. I own ARC396 Pro, ARC996Pro, ARC780, but this ARC500 is not as friendly user as the others ... can't understand why ... probably just me !
And if you are in a area with a P25 network (sorry but I'm from Quebec and not really aware of the systems in your area), the freeware Pro96com for P25 decoding is a great tool you can connect directly to the PSR'S 500 and 600 without installaling a discriminator output as the PC/IF output does the job. (See attachment).
As a personnal need, I really prefer that freeware compare to Unitrunker which I use for Edacs networks which are omnipresent in my area (Montreal).
I've bought my PSR-600 a month ago and really enjoying it. You can see in my signature I'm not a newbie and add alot of "scars" using scanners and that the 600 is another addition to my toy collection !
By the way, I bought my PSR-600 on a recent trip in San Diego in the local HRO store there who match the 450 $ price from The Radio Company" ad. I know that the RC guy made a special effort for us members (I really recognize is effort) , but being in an area where there was an HRO store that I could pick up one PSR and save on shipping and customs was hard to beat. I paid 450 $ usd plus around 35 $ cdn to import it in Canada at customs and that it. I add over 400 US $ extra from my last summer US trip where I exchange that money when the exchange rate was in our favor (so I save there). So for around 500 cdn $ I ended up with that PSR-600 in my canadian home !
Good luck in your choice !
