Edmonton Grand Prix freqs
Greetings all -
Anyone got any frequencies for the Edmonton Grand Prix and its support races? I have some stuff pulled off of racebyrace.com for the CART/CCWS folks, but there's also the NASCAR Canadian Tire (ex CASCAR) folks, the "track" itself, Mazda Champ Car Atlantic, etc.
Any help will be appreciated

Well, this gets complex!!!
Turns out that many of the regular race frequencies are allocated to commercial service in the Edmonton area......
The reason for this is the way Industry Canada allocates frequency usage near the Canada-USA border. All of the regular (public) Champ series frequencies apply in cities like Toronto and Mont-Tremblant (see http://www.racebyrace.com/drivers/ccwsdrivers.phtml for the regular frequencies).
This is because Industry Canada has allocated spectrum in these southern areas keeping the USA "in the picture" (so to speak). Up here in Edmonton, Industry Canada doesn't care what's happening 600km away, and has allocated a bunch of the regular Champ series frequencies to other commercial users.
The solution? First off, some of the regular Champ series frequencies are used. Where there's a frequency conflict with an allocated channel in the Edmonton area, Industry Canada has allocated frequencies in the Amateur 70cm band (430-450MHz) for use for the duration of the event.
I don't know which driver/crew the frequencies belong to, but here's the list of Amateur 70cm frequencies that's been used for the past 2 years for the Edmonton Grand Prix:
5 Repeaters (5 watt Effective radiated power)
444.050 / 449.050
444.000 / 449.000
443.900 / 448.900
443.850 / 448.850
443.800 / 448.800
12 simplex (2 watt portables)
443.950, 445.200, 445.550, 445.600
445.650, 445.700, 445.750, 445.800
445.850, 445.900, 448.950, 449.650
So, program all of the regular Champ series frequencies in and add the above 70cm list. That should cover the whole race!
Good scanning.....

Thanks for this again Ray. I know last year they had the same deal, and even though I had all the frequencies programmed in, it seemed unless you were within a block or two of the actual race site, you heard zip. But then again, I did a wide frequency search using my PCR100 and TrunkPCR, and came up with a crap load of other frequencies that seemed to be all broadcast (CBS I think) related, and they were blasting out so much power I could hear them when I had to go out to Leduc on race weekend, 40km away.

Hey, I was just thinking, as of July 1st my new house is only two blocks directly west of the airport... should be in for some good scanning this time maybe. My current location (12 blocks south of the airport) was crap for results last year...

Wanna help me rig a 160m dipole in the yard though? That's one of my first projects.

So, are you saying that IC is assigning amateur radio frequencies for non-
amateur use on a regular basis?

Aren't hams technically secondary users on the 70cm band?

70cm Secondary Users
That is correct, we are secondary users of this band. I believe that for the first year of this event IC was in contact with the provincial frequency coordinator to ensure that the frequencies used would not cause interference with any frequencies being used for amateur repeaters etc.

Ok, scanners are programmed, UniTrunker loaded onto the computer, GPS at the ready..
I am taking a wandering track up from Bragg Creek starting tomorrow morning some time. Gonna hit a few towns and do some scanning/sleuthing on the way.
If you're going to the race, or if you see my WRB (world rally blue) Subaru WRX with the "REDWOOD FIRE/RESCUE" plate on the front, give me a wave.
