Default Common names of cities, etc.

Be careful about adding data for city or county names that exist in more than one state. This is quite similar to the disambiguation issue we have with common names for trunked systems.

For example I had one member add a short stub for 'city of Salem'. Fortunately I backtracked the member and checked his data, and was able to associate that with Oregon - but there are a couple of other 'Salem's as well (notably in Massachusetts). There's no need for a disambiguation article, since the database (usually at the county level) has the associated county names (Marion, in this case) marked with the state abbreviation.

Try to be specific as you can. It helps!

That's why it's always helpful to have your city / state location in your header. I wish everyone did it. For example in the above... mciupa doesn't have a location. It's hard to know what city and state he's posting from. However... ka3jjz is easily recognized as being in Glen Burnie, MD

Default The Most Common Place Name in America

The place name of "Riverside" can be found in all but four states (it does not exist in Hawaii, Alaska, Louisiana, and Oklahoma).

The runner up was Centerville in 45 states, followed by Fairview (43 states), Franklin (42), Midway (40), Fairfield (39), Pleasant Valley (39), Troy (39), Liberty (38), and Union (38). Springfield isn't even in the top ten (only 35 states have a Springfield).

I doubt there are more than a handful of place names that designate only one location in the USA, and there are practically no names that are used only once in the entire world.

Just to add to the potential confusion are situations like this one - there is a City of Rochester in western New York, and a Town of Rochester downstate. This has confused VIPs, one of whom referred to the Catskills when speaking about something that is located in the City of Rochester, hundreds of miles from there.

Not to be outdone by NY, Texas has 8 seperate places called "Cross Roads" and 4 named "Crossroads". I am also not sure but think that we have one of those unique names, "Cut and Shoot", Montgomery Co., TX.

Apparently you don't travel much. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of city and town names used only once, like Tokyo, Zurich, Gais, Kumamoto, just to name a few.
