I use an open wire line fed dipole on 40 at about 63 feet (I use it on other bands as a comparison to other antennas). I would like a bit more gain on 40 and am considering a Bruce Array. The ARRL Antenna Book claims some benefit over a dipole. Any posters here have any practical experience with one or a variation?

I've tried an N4GG "array" in the past on 20 meters and wasn't impressed. I thought about an Extended Double Zepp but space restrictions prohibit installing one.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

They are bi-directional. Can you make good use of a fixed bi-directional 40m antenna?

I suppose it's all about what compromises one is willing to tolerate. I keep searching for the "best" 40 meter wire antenna for DX and I always feel dejected afterwards. I've also considered a vertical Moxon, but there's not enough information on a vertical variation for me to feel comfortable relying on one.

Maybe I should just settle for an inverted L. Cebik seemed to like 'em. Would be interesting to compare one to a 1/2 WL above ground dipole on 40, though I think most people use inverted L antennas for 160/80.

The search continues...

Thanks for the input.
