Got a magnetic mount vertical antenna at a Hamfest. Its base is about 4 or 5 inches in diameter and stands about 2" above the metal mounting surface. From there is a rod about 13" long going into what appears to be a plastic encased loading coil. This item is about 1/2" thick and about 3 1/2" long and has 2 black circular stripes going around the diameter of the coil. Coming out of the top of the coil is another thinner rod about 7" long topped with a round ball like a BB. There is about 17' of thin coax (RG58U?) with a PL259 coax connector on the end of the coax. Attached is a picture of the antenna in front of my dishwasher sitting on a oven broiler pan. Is this for 2 meters?

Get an analyzer and see if it is resonant on 2 meters and/or 70 cm. If not, you could run the analyzer on each band and see if it has a low SWR on any of the other bands. You might have a pretty good find there...

It -could- be a dual band 2 meter/70 centimeter antenna or a co-linear 70cm antenna, based on those measurements. Without a part number/model number or something else to go by the only way to know for sure is to dow what AB4BF said, you need someone with an antenna analyzer to hook up to it and see where it's happiest.

With a base whip of 12" I would suspect it might be a 220 ham antenna (maybe 440).

Looks pretty old.

The only sure fire way of finding out has already been suggested.

When I found an old mag mount antenna in the storage shed after we moved into my in-laws' house, I had no idea what it was for. I finally slapped it on the roof of my truck and hooked my analyzer to it. Lo and behold, it resonated in the vicinity of 27.200 MHz...

I actually used to make my first contact on 10 meters, making contact with a ham in Florida.

Agree

Looks like an old mag mount CB antenna I've seen before from the 70s or 80s.

I'm with you. Reason being the base. Looks cheap. Definitely not a commercial antenna, and don't look like something any ham antenna manufacturer would make. The whole length is under 2', that eliminates any dual bander I'm thinking.
I'm thinking an 11 meter bubble pack antenna sold by some department store back in the CB hey days

....I imagine that upper radiator is adjustable in length...if it is- put my money on it as an old A/S (Antenna Specialist) CB antenna from the early 1970's.....:)

.... another 2 cents worth opinion

And I agree that it looks like an Antenna Specialists CB or scanner antenna from the '70's.
